Post subject: Which SATA drive to go with my AI7? Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

My 3 year old IBM Deskstar has to back for warranty replacement. Before I
send it off, I need to get a new drive. I currently have 46GB and haven't
filled it up, so I figure 80GB will be plenty for the new one, and I want
SATA. Since I got the AI7, I've been doing some research and thought I had
it pegged at the Maxtor which showed excellent speeds, but I've just read a
bit about the IBM/Hitachi and some of it's 'read' benchmarks were almost
double the Maxtor's. The write speeds were a little slower in many of the
tests. I figure my drive will be doing a lot more reading than writing, so
that may be the way to go. I wouldn't mind it if Windows took a little less
time to load. It also has a 3 year warranty (which has already come in
handy for me) as opposed to Maxtor's 1 year.
The drives are both 80GB and $86 for the Maxtor (zipzoomfly) and $74 for the
IBM (newegg). The only drawback to the IBM that I've read about is that it
can make a chirping noise every 10 to 15 minutes, even if it's idle.
I'll be ordering tomorrow (Wednesday) and will probably get the IBM/Hitachi
unless someone can shed a different light on this.
Any thoughts?
Gary

I also have the AI7, and have considered SATA as well. But, I haven't bit,
for a variety of reasons.
FWIW, I'm not an SATA "expert", but from what I've seen, MANY of these
so-called SATA drives are merely PATA (parallel) drives in disguise! Many
have a "chip" that's nothing more than a "bridge" between the inherent IDE
nature of the drive, to the new SATA interface required by your mobo. So
for all the SATA hype, many people are naively paying SATA prices for only
"pseudo" SATA drives.
Personally, I feel spending money on SATA drives (unless you go for the real
thing, like WD Raptor) is a terrible waste. First, assuming it's really a
PATA drive under the covers, the SATA interface isn't going to provide any
additional advantages, except perhaps the thinner cable. Second, you'll pay
at least twice as much for the essentially the same PATA drive. Third,
we're only at SATA 1.0, which is hardly mature (I've seen plenty of problems
on the IC7, think the AI7 is really any better?). Finally, we haven't even
exploited nicities like Native Command Queuing (NCQ), something you're going
to see more of in the coming months.
Basically, unless you get a REAL SATA drive like the Raptor ($$$), SATA is
nothing but a fool's paradise (at least right now). The early adopters will
always jump on ANYTHING new and make it easier and cheaper for the rest of
us in the long run. If you're one of those, I thank you If not, forget
SATA for now (wait about a year, they'll be comparable in price to PATA,
support NCQ, probably ALL will be 10k RPM, quieter, faster, maybe even
support SATA 2.0).

Well, I have to agree with Jim, except about the prices. I wasn't aware of
problems with SATA on the IC7 or AI7, so I hope I don't have any.
I've only seen 2 SATA shootouts that included PATA drives. One had a popular
WD model (JB1200??) and the other had identical Maxtor models in SATA and
PATA. I don't remember much about the one with the WD except that it did
well, but was edged out by a couple of the faster SATA drives.
The other test had Maxtor, WD and Seagate SATA drives, and the Maxtor PATA.
The Maxtor SATA won the tests and the PATA version came in last, but the
differences weren't that big.
The WD Raptor is fast, but I think I read that it was noisy and hot. Plus,
it's expensive.
Generally, I feel the same as Jim about jumping on new technology. My
reasons for getting an 80GB drive instead of going for the better value of a
120 or 160 is that faster drives are just around the corner and I don't need
anything larger than 80 right now. Why waste the extra money? By the time
this drive gets full, faster things will be available. I'm going with SATA
instead of PATA because there is only a $7 price difference. For 7 bucks
I'll go with the thinner cable and possibly better performance.

I have gotten a couple of Maxtor SATA drives that perform well... 7200 RPM
and 8 MB cache and a *very* reasonable price at the same time that
capacities are not limited. The Raptor line of SATA drive have 10K RPM's
going for them but they are limited in size and very expensive, personal
opinion, and thus not worth their price for me.

Go with the Hitachi drives, they are blazingly fast. Yeah they do "chirp"
every once in a while, but not every 15 minutes ... more like once every
cuppla days. The noise is disconcerting at first, sounds EXACTLY like a head
crash, but you get used to it. According to my source at Hitachi, this is
the price you pay for that level of performance. The drives R/W mechanism is
so tightly calibrated that it needs to occasionally "recalibrate" itself
based on minute differences in expansion/contraction due to heat
fluctuations. This "recalibration" is what causes the chirp/squeek sound.
The three year warranty is another plus.

I've ordered the drive. The Hitachi web site says all their drives with 8MB
caches have a 3 year warranty. The newegg.com site says it's a 1 year
warranty. When I asked newegg about this, they said it could be because it's
an OEM drive or it could be a mistake. I think the Deskstar that I'm sending
in for replaced (RMA) was also an OEM drive, but they're it still has a 3
year warranty.
I suppose I'll know for sure if I ever have a problem.

WOW, I ordered the Hitachi drive on Wed through newegg.com for $74 shipped.
Today is Friday and it just came in. That was fast. Tracking said it
wouldn't be here until Monday.
I wonder if the IBM site still has that fast format utility that I used on
my old IBM Deskstar. I did the whole thing in about 10 seconds.
Any ideas of a good cloning program so I can just duplicate the old drive?

BootIt NG will do it for free (http://www.bootitng.com), just skip the
install and it will take you to the partition manager. You'll have to copy
individual partitions one by one, but considering the price, not a bid deal.
It will let you resize, format, etc., the partitions as well.
