Post subject: SB51G problem
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>shuttle (more info?)

I bought an SB51G (Neon) for my son for Christmas. We assembled it today:

 - Intel P4 2.4GHz CPU
 - 512MB Crucial P2700 (DDR333) memory
 - Western digital 160 MB disk
 - Lite-ON DVD/CR-RW

We loaded XP on it and began with the stsem update, then started adding
applications. During this, after doing an update for Word 2000, we
re-booted.

The system then failed to re-boot, it would show the XP splash screen
for a few seconds, then reset/re-boot.

We tried using the XP CD to "repair" the system - it failed to repair,
so we tried ro re-install XP.

Now, each time after loading Windows from the CD, and selecting
"Install", we get the "Agree to these terms" screen, and press F8 to
continue - at which point the system resets and re-boots - this is
totally reproducible.

So, since this was working (for several hours), and now refuses to work,
it would seem to me that it has to be HW (leaving the system to cool off
has no effect).

I tried re-seating the memory, and even moving it into the second slot -
same problem.

I will buy some more memory tomorrow and try replacing it - if that
doesn't fix it, any uggestions what to try next? There doesn't seem to
be much that isn't Shuttle left - I don't really suspect the disk or CD
drive...

Can anyone think of any scenario in which the CPU could be at fault?

Other suggestions?

Actually, I lied about the symptoms (re-reading AFTER posting is not a
good idea!).

What happens after loading XP and pressing F8 is actually a BSD with a
message: REGISTRY_ERROR, and words to the effect that the system has
been shut down to prevent further damage.

That really looks like memory to me ... we will find out when I can get
a new memory card.

Check out http://www.memtest86.com to make sure it's the RAM.
Also, perhaps go easier on the CAS setting in the advanced menu in the BIOS?

I'd say memory too.

What BIOS version are you using - 036?

After loading XP you must load the drivers from the drivers CD in the
order specified.

Ok,problem solved.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they were helpful in at least verifying
that those were not the problem Smile

What it turned out to be was a BIOS setting in the PCI section - the one
which allows extended config info to be written.

I noticed reading through the manual that it said leave this setting
disabled unless some S/W or HW addition caused "an inconsistancy" which
stops the OS from loading.

So I enabled it, and it booted from CD. Then I reformatted the disk and
completely re-loaded, then turned the option back off and all works just
fine.

I had ordered a "spare" memory card just in case, so it looks like when
that arrives tomorrow, my son's system is going to have 1GB of memory Smile

Thanks again for the help - and have a HAppy New Year!

Philip
