Hi all

What sort of memroy should I look for a new camera to be taking? I have a
gut feeling that I want to avoid Secure Digital memory since that seems
to be part of the whole DRM thing that various industry monoliths like
RIAA & MPAA are trying to shove down our throats and part of their agenda
to push their profits above our rights. If I'm wrong on this I'd love to
hear that though.

Other options I've seen include SDRAM for a Mustek camera. Would trhis
not be the most flexible option?

Also, are any cameras bound to their own proprietary RAM formats? Are
they all?

Thanks very much

Cheers

Zak

Yeah I saw a few posts that raised some concerns on that when they
first came out but not since then. Frankly I havent seen anyone bring
up that aspect since then and there seems to be no problem.

I like SD myself - it was small and sturdy and has decent sizes for
sale and the prices have come way down to about the same as other
formats now. Generally you dont pick the card format - you pick the
camera you want then you end up with a format though some of the news
ones use multiple formats. Theres the xD card a new rival card that
may still be a bit pricier. I dont see it on sale much at the local
stores - that and SD and the old compact flash seem popular in newer
cameras. The only one Im a bit worried about is smart media but it
didnt bother me enough to not get the Oly 4040. Some of the older
cameras only use smart media which seems like its on its way out. I
dont see it on sale as much in ads though it hasnt disappeared yet. I
jump on the sales when I see them now so Ive got 3 128 cards now and
plan on getting more. Im paranoid Ill start seeing the SDRAM thing
happen - they were giving it away the last few years it was in such
oversupply and then they finally started phasing it out and now I see
it sold at higher prices than 2100 DDR at many places.

Thing I dont like about smart media besides the 128 meg limit and the
fact they are phasing it out and some say its slower is that it seems
fragile. It feels really thin like you can bend it crack it easily.
The SD cards I used were smaller but they seemed a bit thicker and
sturdier.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've had nothing but compact flash and it works great for me. I can't
comment on other formats but CF has so many options (large memory capacity,
microdrive, etc.) and seems to be the cheapest of the bunch. It is also very
popular which means my investment in a bunch of cards can be carried forward
when I upgrade my camera.

Sony Memory Stick and Smart Media are both thin and cheap 3rd party
design could crack. If there's one thing I don't like about SD (and
MM), they're so small if you drop them in a shag rug, you're screwed. Wink

I dropped an SD cartridge in the middle of a Zoo. This is an "inforest" type
zoo with cages in amongst the trees and a gravel path about 2 miles long.

I checked the first film at the end and tracked the cages I saw in the pics.
I then put in the second cartridge and verified the next few and went back
to the cage before them. There it was on the ground in the gravel. I had to
blow the grit out of the connection holes. This all took about 20 minutes
worth of panic for the 64M SD I just purchased the day before!

Wheeeew!
