If I format a 64Kb SD card in my camera - Kodak DX6440 - it seems to cause
problems when I try to read it with my card reader.

None of the photos on the card can be transferred to my pc although my
laptop seems to read it without problem. I have to resort to copying photos
to the laptop then putting them on another sd card before copying them onto
the pc through the card reader.

What is causing this problem? Would it be better if I formatted the card
through the card reader? Would that caused difficulties in the camera using
the sd card?

Many thanks in advance!

Steve

You will never know until you try it. But I would do it since you
are having problems and I assume that you have reloaded your PC
software and drivers with the latest versions downladed from Kodak.
There are tons of ways to get it working again if you have a problem,
starting with using the following:
" Thank you very very much for the fast and useful replies Mahesh.
I've just formatted the card using my PC's File Manager. It was very
easy, just right click on the new removable hard drive and select
Format. Then choose FAT32 (not FAT or NTFS, although FAT should be
okay I guess). It was all done in a few seconds."
Then, lots of software from third parties will format an SD card.
Go for it.

Are you using the same card reader on both machines,???
If so, reinstall the card reader software on your PC.
Or connect your camera directly to the USB port on your PC.

It's a PC problem not a camera or memory card problem IMHO.

Greetings Steve,

The Kodak cameras format the card using standard FAT format. This should
allow the use of the card in just about any Windows or Mac computer
including early versions of windows and NT. What operating system are you
using and is it set to FAT32 or FAT? FAT is the format used by many card
and camera makers. It will work in almost any system including those set to
work in FAT32. It should work in your situation as well.

FAT32 has issues with NT and 95 as that technology was not around when FAT32
was released back in 96. FAT32 is really an enhancement of the File
Allocation Table file system (1977) that supports large drives with improved
disk space efficiency. It is only currently supported by two operating
systems. It came out near the end of Windows 95b. Windows included it in the
SE version of 98 which also included a converter for FAT. Most all systems
will work with FAT32.

Not sure why your camera may not work correctly, are you using NT or 95?

The card reader is only attached to the pc. My laptop has an sd slot so I
insert it direct.

Hi Ron, I'm using XP Pro on the pc and XP Home on the laptop.

I've uninstalled EasyShare and am simply taking the card out and inserting
it in my card reader - attached to the pc. The laptop has an sd slot so the
card gets inserted direct.

Both laptop and pc are formatted as NTFS

I thought it was odd that the pc couldn't recognise what was on the sd card.
I'll try re-installing the software which came with the card reader and see
if that makes any difference.
