Will normal sdram ddr memory work if used in a mobo that supports DDR2?

NO. DDR RAM is incompatible with DDR2 RAM. They use a different number of
pins and a different voltage.

Depends on the mobo.
Most will ... at slower speed.
(Mine does just fine.)
Some won't.
Others require two matched chips.

So, the question becomes: what motherboard do you have?
And, is the price of new *that* expensive, what with the continuously
dropping prices of memory?

No. You have no idea what your talking about. A DDR modual
will not fit into a DDR2 slot, or vise-versa.

How does that work then when DDR2 is a different package to DDR?

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright
until you hear them speak.........

Use a hammer.

Hammers do solve a lot of problems, no question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR-2

"Backwards compatibility

DDR2 DIMMs are *not backwards compatible* with DDR DIMMs.
The notch on DDR2 DIMMs is in a different position than DDR DIMMs,
and the pin density is slightly higher than DDR DIMMs.
DDR2 is a 240-pin module, DDR is a 184-pin module."

True, but some MBs had DDR and DDR2 slots. You could use either but not
both. I have an Asus P5GDC with just that configuration. It will take up to
2gbs of either DDR or DDR2.

When something is too big, I use a saw. When something is too small, tape
does the trick.
