Post subject: SN41G Hard Drive and Temperature Issues - HELP!!
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>shuttle (more info?)

Hi,

My HD has recently been discovered as a little damaged (bad sectors
appearing ) causing crashes, locks and several reinstalations of
Windows! And so i am looking at getting another HD. I have the Shuttle
SN41G Version 1 and am not sure how large a drive it will recognise, i
heard it might only be able to take up to 137Gb roughly.

Unfortunately Shuttle have removed the specs for this machine off of
their site and so i don't know where else i can go for info.

I have a 120Gb in there at the moment and am looking at getting a
larger, maybe 250 if it can take it for film editing, music storage
etc.

Can anyone tell me what it can take please? I have the original SN41G
with the original BIOS and if your interested i have an AMD Athlon
3000+ XP CPU, Radeon 9800XT, 1Gb RAM. It used to run real nice, now it
gets errors!

Its been suggested that the problem is that heat could be causing the
errors and malfunctioning.

Heres what i have on the temp, all numbers are in centrigrade:

Radeon card - 74c (in games)
Board temp - 44c
CPU temp - 51c
Power/Aux temp - 45c

The specs for my Maxtor HDD say its operating temp is 5c-55c. I have
the standard heat pipe and am thinking of getting a PCI exhaust board.
Other then that i don't know what else to do. I don't want to start
hacking holes in the casing so thats not really an option.

Has anyone else succeeded in bringing the temp down?

I have been looking at putting two HDD's in too and removing the
floppy drive. Guess that'll be a no-no now Sad .

Please help as my machine is in dire need of a new HDD and i don't
know what to do!

I'm in the UK so any shop/sites links would be useful

Thanks.

I have the SN41G2 (the newer model) and I don't believe it can take
much above a 2500+. Are you sure you have not "over-CPU'd" your
m'board? What does the POST screen show as the installed CPU?

Up to the 3000+ 333fsb AMD Athlon XP "Barton" are supported on this board.
I have one installed for well over a year without issue until I pulled it
to another machine.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Is this CPU temp under load or at idle? I run the same CPU but using
onboard graphics and I only hit that temperature under load. At idle, it's
usually in the mid to upper 40s. The board/PSU temps are also about 5
degrees above what mine runs. I suspect the vid card is putting a little
too much heat into the system.

The PCI exhaust board is something to try to get the vid card temperature
down a bit. Also, where is the box located? What is the ambient
temperature? Does it get good airflow? My box is at about 26C ambient
temperature and inside one of those doored desk hideaways for CPUs, so it
doesn't get the greatest cool-off. I can knock off several degrees just by
opening the door and giving it better airflow.

Also, what temp is set under BIOS for CPU fan speedup? I dropped mine down
to 44C. I'd rather the louder fan in exchange for a cooler CPU.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
