i noticed that on my new SN41G2 the hard drive lamp si constantly flashing
(once per second)
first i thought that it was the OS constantly accessing the drive (WinXP
SP1), and indeed it is not flashing when in BIOS, onlyu when XP is loaded
already.
But maybe it is just a feature of SN41G2, and the hard - drive is actually
not accessed by the OS? I've never seen an OS constantly accessing the hard
drive...
Anyone having SN41G2 and having the same behavior? >> Stay informed about: SN41G2 hard-drive lamp flashing |

Well, here's a few things I'd try to diagnosis this further. First, get
the latest virus definitions for your anti-virus program of choice and run
it. It would not be uncommon to see a lot of hard drive activity with
certain viruses. There is a one out there recently which randomly
overwrites random portions of the drive for example (and if you have that
one, I hope you have backups or know a geeky type who knows how to use
forensic tools for data recovery). Also get spyware checking tools to see
if you might have a keylogger or the like installed on your system. This
could also cause excessive hard drive activity.
Second, if the virus check comes back clean, download one of those Linux
"live" CDs, like Knoppix. Burn it to a CD and boot under the CD. See if
the hard drive light still keeps lighting up when running under Linux. If
not, there's a problem with your XP install. If it does keep lighting up
under this other OS, then check that all the connections (cables attached
to the motherboard) are securely seated. If that doesn't work, post back
everything you've tried and what the results are.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: SN41G2 hard-drive lamp flashing |

Hi rosty,
my SN41G2 behaves exactly the same way. I don't think that this is
really a problem. On the other hand it seems to depend on the OS you're
using. I have also XP SP1 on this machine and maybe NT 4.0 would not
produce this flashing... (never installed it on my SN41G2).
But how do you know that the OS is not accessing the hard drive
permanently? Also it could be some apps reading and/or writing to the
hard disk.
Maybe you would be surprised to see all the hard disk activity when
using filemon from sysinternals
In my opinion this is a "feature" implemented by shuttle to show access
to the hard disk that is not permanent. If you copy a large file instead
then the light will be permanently on.
Greetings

I don't think it is a virus, I noticed the same flashing (exactly once per
second) when started the Win XP SP1 installation, it is flashing like that
right from the beginning, when nothing is written to the drive yet, you have
to see that flash, it's like a timer counting every second, not the usual HD
activity....

So it might be a feature if your SN41G2 behaves exactly the same way. I
don't think the OS after a clean install is accessing HD like that, every
second, wiht the 512Mb of RAM. But it seems that whether was it designed to
do so only someone from the Shuttle team can give an explanation...

Rosty,
I had the same happen on an SK41G and after a search around
newsgroups, found it to be a common problem with Shuttles.
It is caused by XP checking for a disk in the CD/DVD drive.
A fix is to edit the registry and change the "autorun" setting to stop XP
from doing the checking. -
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
Open the "AutoRun" key and change the value to 0<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: SN41G2 hard-drive lamp flashing |

I changed that registry key, and it's no longer flashing!
Thank you!
owe you a beer!
