Well, I have just been down the same road as many others and discovered that
not only does the SN41G2 lack a line input, the mic input is mono (although
appearing to be a stereo jack, it is actually carrying voltage out on the
ring/middle connector, so plugging in any stereo line out lead is not
recommended). The SPDIF connector is no good to me, so my only options left
in order to get stereo in are to buy a cheap PCI sound card or to explore
the option to use the rear speaker output in its claimed "other" mode.
Which means I may well have to flash the BIOS, and sacrifice a goat or two,
if Google'd posts are anything to go by.

I have two dim-bulb questions at this point:

a) Erm, how does one determine the current BIOS version ? The splash
screens go by so quickly, and the actual BIOS menus do not seem to reveal
anything. Is it the bottom line of the main starting screen (EPA logo,
memory test, ide detects, etc) - I reckon with about 5 or 6 reboots I may
just about be able to write down the whole string...

b) I only have one ancient floppy drive which may or may not work (previous
attempts to hook it up with the case apart have failed, but that may have
been me failing to try all 2^^n ways of connecting the lead). How difficult
is it to burn a bootable CD with DOS on it, and boot from that ? Pointers
to step-by-step instructions particularly welcome. My kids will not thank
me if I smoke their homework PC !

TIA.

Disable the Quick Power-On Self Test in the BIOS, and it will test the
memory several times giving you plenty of time to read the boot up
screen.

Download AIDA32 this system utility will give you the bios version through
windows. Your bios will be in the format FN41sxxx where xxx is the bios
version latest version 021

Download Winflash to flash your bios through Windows - I've used this on
over 100 Shuttle XPC's none of them have failed. Email me, watch the spam
catcher if you want the location

You could also try using the internal Audio CD_IN Connector, CN6 as a
line in and run a connector to the outside of the box if you don't
have to use CN6 for your CD Audio. Most more recent drives don't need
it.

The "Pause" key will stop the boot process and allow you to see what
version the BIOS is. "Enter" will resume the boot. The BIOS Flashed
version is at the beginning the 4th line of text in parens

I use WinISO to make my bootable CD's

Interesting link Wink I may have a go with this later...

What I have succeeded in doing is using the line-in pins on J6 by rewiring
the leads, so that the microphone socket is now acting as line-in. At the
J6 end, I moved a red wire from 1 to 7, and a yellow wire from 3 to 4. This
has now given me a line-level stereo input, but obviously I have lost the
ability to have mic-in. If NVSWAP will successfully let me swap the
functions of line-in and rear-out, say, I will wire the front connector back
the way it was and use the rear speaker connector instead.

[While pondering all this, I have been sitting at my "office" PC not
noticing the fact it does possess a line input, and a 100Mb link to my
Shuttle box, and is nearer my hi-fi...]

So they do !

I have S013 apparently, as supplied.

Another useful link, thanks. Thanks to the others who replied, too. It is
all a bit moot currently as I discovered my (ahem) copy of Audio Cleaning
Lab was not copied well enough to avoid copy protection problems, so I am
awaiting an Ebay purchase of a more up-to-date version arriving in the post.

Many thanks again.
