Post subject: Shuttle SS51 v1.0 & DVD Burner Hell!
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>shuttle (more info?)

Someone please help me, I am already alone in the corner of my room
sobbing incontrollable.

I have installed numerous CD burners (Sony 510A, LG GSA-4040B, Pioneer
A05, Pioneer A06) in my SS51G XPC (v1.0 motherboard) but simply cannot
burn any CDs (CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW, or CD+RW). I can play any DVD but
cannot write to a DVD (Nero v5.5.10.42 starts to burn and then freezes
and yet another costly coaster is created). Nero can however burn to
CD-R and CD-RW media.

Here are some details that IO tried, none of which solved my problem:

1) Tried evaluation versions of Nero v5.5.10.42 and DVD Xcopy Express
v3.01 to ni avail.

2) Tried every format of DVDs with the exception of DVD-RAM from
Maxell, Memorex, E3, and Verbatim --> now all coasters and cost me a
small fortune!

3) Tried DMA, Ultra DMA, PIO, primary IDE as slave with Master hard
disk, secondary IDE as Master with hard disk on Primary IE -->
coasters.

4) Removed my modem and ATI RADEON card to use the onbard videdo -->
coasters.

5) Tried the burners in my SN41G2 and they all worked fine.

6) Changed my IDE cable with the one working in my SN41G2 -->
coasters.

7) Tried new install of XP Pro with an absolute minimal of programs
--> coasters.

Cool Installed the latest firmware onto the DVD burners and FS51
motherboard.

9) Installed the latest RADEON drivers (v3.6) as well as the latest
onboard VGA drivers from Shuttle --> coasters.

I think I have tried everything and I am starting to suspect that
there are issues with the v1.0 of the FS51 motherboard that comes with
the early SS51G computers.

Questions:

1) Anyone have a similar system that works? What are your BIOS
settings and which burner and burner software do you use?

2) Any suggestions? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

PS You have to see the faces at Best But each time I return a DVD
burner! I loooooooooove that 30 day return policy!

PPS Please post the response on to this board for everyone to benefit,
thanks!

SS51, by virtue of its SiS chipset, cannot effectively handle that
much bandwidth on its IDE bus. I had the same problem with my SS51g,
although I solved it by burning to a maximum of 12x (any faster and
the JustLink would kick in because the buffer would empty). I, too,
tried troubleshooting numerous things, and was only able to get a
slight improvement by throwing out the SiS IDE drivers and installing
the stock XP IDE drivers. It just seems that the SiS core logic isn't
capable of handing that much bandwidth, ESPECIALLY where a DVD burner
is concerned.

Thus, I changed over to a SB61g2, and I can once again burn at 48x
without buffer emptying. Sorry man, but I think the problem is your
SS51g.

i had a similar problem with my SN41G2, and found it was the nvidia
ide drivers, not sure what chipset the ss51 one has, but i would
suggest if it's not using standard ide drivers, to change it, and see
what happens

Hi Wim!

You are giving me hope, can you pleae post the exact SIS site where
you downloaded the latest drivers? I have used the ones from Shuttle's
web site. Perhaps if I use the ones you used, it will work for me. My
system is extremely similar to yours. Thanks in adavnce for the web
site!

Wim, you solved it for me! I downloaded the latest SiS chipset drivers
from the SiS web site and everything works fine. I am burning at 4X
with no more coasters.

Babar, sorry, but you were quite incorrect. The hardware is more than
capable of burning DVDs. Looks like you upgraded you machine for
nothing.
