A couple years ago, there was talk in this group and others about
people's SY-KT333 Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition motherboard freezing up
at random momemts. Based on what I read, I don't think the problem was
ever truly diagnosed. Although everybody had the same basic problem,
there were subtle differences as well as subtle fixes that didn't work
for everybody. Let me explain my situation.

I bought the motherboard at Fry's on 1-1-2003. Because I was cheap, I
purchased some generic memory, PC2100 256 MB manufactured by Legacy
Electronics, whoever they are. To this day, that memory has worked
flawlessly.

On two occasions, I've attempted to upgrade the RAM with a pair of
Kingston PC2700 memory sticks, one 256 MB and one 512 MB. Both of these
RAM modules work fine in other computers but in the Soyo motherboard,
they would freeze up the computer within 3-4 minutes from booting.
Either Windows would freeze or I couldn't get that far in the first
place, the BIOS screen being as far as I could get sometimes. In every
situation, I was forced to do a cold reboot, nothing else would reset
it. And once I did that, the problem would just be repeated all over
again. Eventually I just put the generic memory back in - out of
frustration - since I couldn't make it work any other way.

Fast forward to yesterday when I upgraded my video card. My new video
card is a 128 MB eVGA "eGEforce FX 5200" card (my old card was 64 MB, I
forget the manufacturer). Just for the heck of it, I decided to try the
512 MB PC2700 Kingston RAM module once more. And wouldn't you know,
instead of freezing after 3-4 minutes on a consistent basis, I can now
use my computer for 3-4 HOURS before it freezing on a consistent basis.
What do you make of this? My problem wasn't eliminated but the new
video card has lessened the severity of it. Is there any hope for me?
What should I try next?

download these to programs:

http://www.memtest86.com/

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

i'd run memory86 first. start before bed and check in the morning. if no errors move on the prime95. it's best to let it go for at least 12hrs. any major problems it will halt it self sooner though.

we'll start with that.

change the timimg on the ram to auto detect, or go really
conservative and CAS 3, like maybe 3-3-3, also it sometimes helps to
raise the agp voltage to 1.6 or so, this from using the KT400 platinum
board. I have used many Soyo boards, all are fine. Just my 2 cents.
