Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>overclocking (more info?)

Hi,

I have an new ASUS P4P800 with an 2.8 CPU at 800 MHZ FSB. Every try to
overclock failed with a blue screen at booting. Who can tell me the best
settings? The overclocking tuner onboard does not work, same result.

Bios ist the newest 1008.

a few weeks ago with the 1007 bios, it runs at 3.22 GHZ, just after turn the
fsb on 230.

Thank you for answers!

How about a few clues? Operating sytstem? Temperatures (from BIOS or when
operating at standard speed: idle and under load? Room air temperature?
Voltages? Are PCI and AGP bus speeds locked? What operating system? A
BSOD can only occur in the OS load, not at boot when the BIOS or boot
sectors are still in control; at what point in the OS load does the Blue
Screen Of Death? What is the report in the BSOD? Does the BSOD report
vary? Does the BSOD occur EVERY time your system is overclocked? Have you
reinstalled (or repaired) the OS since flashing the BIOS? Have you used the
trouble-shooting mode to learn the last successfuly invoked module of the
OS? Have you started in command prompt mode only?

Without knowing the facts I can only speculate.

Since the system overclocked successfully befor you flashed the BIOS, I'd
suspect a conflict between the NEW BIOS and the OLD installation of the OS.
Or if not, then a corrupted OS installation. Or, if not, then a change in
the cooling efficiency (loss of thermal compound, shifted heat sink, etc.)
Or a power supply problem.

Remember, the most likely source of a computer problem is Operator (or User)
Error. This has been the number one source of computer problems since the
first electronic reprogramable digital computer was activated. Check and
recheck ALL of your BIOS, Jumper, and OS settings. Then check again. Be
especially sure that the settings that you THINK you have are the settings
that you ACTUALLY have!

Good luck.

I suspect the BIOS "upgrade" is the source of your problems. Why not go
back to the old BIOS and see?

I'm running a 2.8 800FSB on an ASUS P4P Deluxe (1007 BIOS), OCZ PC3700
memory, Win2k SP4 and my system runs best at 240 FSB and memory divider 4:5.
Running the memory in sync at slower FSB does not pay off for me.

Thanks for answer.

OS: Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1
Memory: 2 x 256 MB Corsair XMS PC 3200LL
VGA: Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro
HDD: 2 x Maxtor 80 GB SATA

The temparatur is now from 27° C to 40°C. Normal.
At 3.22 GHZ the temparatur was at 44°C.
Board temparatur was not higher than 40°C. At this time 30°C.

The messages are between the blacke startscreen "Windows loaded" and the
complete loaded system.

Messages for example: "BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO" OR
"FAULT_PAGE_IN_NONPAGE_AREA"

AT 202MHZ FSB does it work! At 203 MHZ it fails.

Are that details to help you?

I flashed back back from BIOS 1008 to 1007. No change...overclocking failed
again.

Thanks for answer.

Check your memory one stick at a time.

Frank's suggestion is a good place to start ... could be a memory module
insertion problem, memory module failure, or an indication of a discrepancy
between the expected memory setup and the actual memory setup. Did you
reset the CMOS after flash updating the BIOS?

 >>How about a few clues? Operating sytstem?<<
I used to overclock my AMD all the time, but I never got the blue screen
running Win98.
Windows 98se was never made to deal with systems this fast anyway.
Even with this one, I can get the blue screen on XP by over setting some
things. But it takes a little more to do it to win98 then what he said.
BUT, I can't be sure. I'm running a P4 2.4 @ 2.95 I would be running
faster, but I can't set the DDR Ratio on this board. All of the newer P4PE
Boards you can.
I thought a bios flash would fix it, I was wrong.
Besides this, I want to get a new one anyway, so as to use the onboard Raid
controller.
Being able to add 4 More devices to this thing is nice, but I think I only
need the option for 2.

The problem is solved!

Last week I just changed the fsb to overclock. The other settings were on
"AUTO". That was the mistake.

Now I set the memory from AUTO to 320 MHZ fix and the fsb to 250 MHZ. It
works. The 2.8 CPU runs at 3,5 GHZ without any problems! At 256 MHZ it runs
at 3,57 GHZ without problems. More doesn't works.

On this page I found a table for the settings:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/p4-2400c-oc_4.html

Thanks to all for the good help.
