I have an AGP slot in my motherboard and I tried to install an AGP
graphics card. The problem I'm having is that not even the DOS boot
screen comes up readable. All the characters are scrambled and heavily
pixelated. Strangely, everything seems to function normally. Windows
98 acts as if there is no problem. The only problem is that the screen
is so pixelated I can barely make out anything on it.

I'm beginning to think there is some kind of incompatibility between
the graphics card and my motherboard or maybe the monitor?

Any ideas?

Thanks again.

This happened to me for about a week with an MSI GeForce Ti 4400. The pixel
distortion started as small bands across the screen, and after a few days
would cover large chuncks of the screen. Eventually, it started freezing up
within applications and within windows, and finally started locking up my
system during the boot-up process. It was quite obviously the card, as my
old RivaTNT2 functioned quite normally.

I sent it back to MSI (it was still under warranty) and received a new Ti
4800 VTD-8X. No more troubles.

I hope it is not your card taking a dump. Good luck.

There are different versions of AGP (V3 is the current standard) with
different voltages for the card.
Whether an incompatibility between the version of your card and the version
your motherbaord supports is causing your problem, I don't know.
Incompatible versions may just stop working completely.
Some motherboards upport multiple versions but you have to set the right one
in the bios.
