Post subject: Strange BSOD when I disable printer port in BIOS

Hi folks
I have a K7S5A running XP Pro & Athlon XP2000+. A couple of days ago
I got given an old SCSI scanner. Before I plugged the scsi card in, I
went into the BIOS to disable COM & LPT ports, in order to free up
some IRQs just in case. I rebooted & got a STOP BSOD telling me my
BIOS was not ACPI compliant.
After much swearing & mucking about and resetting BIOS to default
values, I got XP back up. However, I've now found that if I disable
the LPT port in the BIOS I get the BSOD again.
It seems I can't disable the printer port anymore, or I get the blue
screen again. I've tried uninstalling the LPT port in Windoze,
shutting down, and back into BIOS again. But each time I disable LPT
(which is currently set to ECP + EPP) I get the BSOD.
I'm running the last HoneyX BIOS, which has been fine for almost a
year now. 512 DDR Ram.
Has anyone else had this problem?

My first guess is that some Windows program is still looking for the LPT
port when you re-start your computer. Can you give more details of the steps
you took in "uninstalling the LPT port in Windoze"?
I'm going to ask what may sound like a stupid question, but did you first
uninstall the "Printer Utilities" software that is usually installed with a
new printer--the program that you use to check ink level or align print
heads in a new cartridge? That program must first be uninstalled before
disabling the LPT port in Device Manager. Then, repeat the above for every
local printer (and network printer) you have if you have more than one
printer installed. After all that, you can then go to disable the parallel
port in the BIOS.

Cheers for the reply. Uninstalling the port was simply Device
Manager, highlight port, then Uninstal. I don't have any printers
installed, other than a bog-standard HP Laserjet 4MP, connected to the
lan via a jet-direct card.
I've never had any local printers installed on this XP installation,
because I've never had any printers.
Hmmm...I'll disconnect the network printer & try that I guess, but
it's using standard XP drivers, nothing special.
Strangely enough I have two identical PC's (well, same CPU, same
K7S5A, both XP, both on the same lan) and this only affects one of
them.

Hmm. Disabling one device might cause the IRQs for other devices to
change. Why that would cause this problem I do not know.
You could try changing the "PNP OS" setting in the BIOS. That could
affect whether or not Windows tries to use ACPI. Be advised that I have no
idea what kind of problems changing that setting might cause. It could
make things worse for all I know.
I don't suppose you have any other programs or drivers that might want to
use the parallel port, like a driver for a ZIP drive that connects to the
parallel port?
You said you uninstalled LPT in Windows. Did you try rebooting Windows
after that _without_ disabling LPT in the BIOS first? Maybe that would
tell you something.

You may have to reinstall a clean copy of XP.
