My K7S5A Rev. 1 with a honey x BIOS is purring along and no need in sight
to upgrade to AMD 64. Obviously I am not a gamer.

Very high-end enthusiast boards are a tough sell for a company like
ECS, due to its value leader and OEM market position. Enthusiasts
looking for the features found in KN1 SLI Extreme are more loyal to
Asus, Abit, MSI, and the like. Ironically, ECS either designs or
manufactures (or both) a good number of motherboards for these and
other 'famous name' companies, though again, towards their value and
OEM segments. >> Stay informed about: I'm Really Surprised the KN1 SLI Extreme |

Yes, I can appreciate that, but I was thinking maybe some folks who
experienced the high value with ECS's earlier boards, might be convinced to
invest in a board which will take them many, many miles. First, it is a
PGA939 pin socket, which can support everything from the A64 3,000 to the
highest level FX or even the X2 dual-core, which I imagine will offer quite an
economical powerboast, some 2-5 years from now. Wouldn't you love to have
that
headroom with your K7S5As? Who likes rebuilding from scratch!? Load on XP
32, with your current hardware and then put XP 64 on a new drive, for a dual
boot, when everything gets right I'll bet you can get 6- 10 years out of
this board and never feel a growth/power pinch.

The KN1 Extremes *are* value boards... *extreme* *value* boards

The thing to look at is RAM. How many different types of RAM have
there been in the last 10 years? DDR3, DDR2, RAMBUS, DDR, SDRAM,
SIMM, EDO, FP and that's just for Pentium, II, III, IV. It's likely
that in 5 years, you'll be wanting to use a different type of RAM
because it's faster and cheaper.

I have an L7S7A2 based Athlon XP 2 GHz machine. It outperforms most
2.4 GHz P4 machines. The most demanding game I have wants an 800 MHz
CPU, so it's more than adequate form my needs.
