hi y'all,

i've got a problem with my tyan tiger mpx motherboard. the system ran
quite well for 2 years (24/7). i shut the system down and from that
point on, i haven't been able to bring it back up again.

system: dual athlon xp 1800+ (recognized as mp's, i know, i should
have used mp's, but xp's worked well, used thermal grease and proper
heat sinks), 2x512mb ram (apacer, non-ecc), a simple nvidia vga card
(tried ati as well). air flow with additional 5 ventilators in
case....

1) there were no beeps at all, just a blank screen.
2) replaced power supply with a brand new 400 watt psu. no success.
3) no vga available, just a black screen. tried a different vga card.
no success.
4) swapped ram. no success.
5) used board in single processor mode. no success.
6) i had the motherboard replaced. NO IDEA. i don't know if using my
old cpu's and memory could damage my motherboard. i do have 2 choices:
7a) don't care about the motherboard and try to plug old cpu's/memory
in
7b) i'll bring my cpus/memory back to my dealer to check (costly
thing...)

what would you do? thanks for your help.

I've seen this issue on several Tyan boards. In almost all cases it was an
issue with the RAM. It seems you need to pound the RAM in with a sledge
hammer in some cases to get all the pins connecting.

forgot to say that i discovered that my ram was all dead when the new board
arrived even the spare dimm i kept for testing purposes, cpus ok
as a test just plug 1 dimm in - if you get the same blank screen & no beeps,
the ram is fried
the board first detects ram, then video, then cpu

HEUREKA!

my screen isn't blank anymore. don't know why. removed a new ram piece and
put the other one in dimm3 (kept dimm 1 and 2 empty). left it running, all over
sudden, charachters....

i'll keep you updated. thank you so far....
hasta luego,

If you have ECC RAM and have the BIOS configured to 'scrub' (can't be
bothered to reboot to look at what it actually says) then it takes a
_long_ time to check it all at boot time - and until it's done the
screen is blank.

I think your memory modules' timing is off somehow. They are not "fully"
compatible with your Tyan Tiger MPX board.

hi y'all,

1) memory should be ok. 4 x 512mb apacer pc-2100, cl 2.5, unbuffered. above
2gb, ecc is a must, below recommended Wink
2) updated bios to 1.05 as well.

the system runs quite smooth now. don't know why. i tweaked the athlon xp
2400+ so that it recognizes them as mp's. (yes, i know, but students have
got to find all kinds of bargains...)

thank you very much for your constructive feedback and help. i appreciate
it very much.

have a nice day,
