Trouble installing a CD/RW Drive

I'm having trouble installing a cd/rw drive in my IBM computer with
windows 98 installed. After I installed the drive it seemed to work
fine but when I shut down and restarted again my computer crashed.
I've asked around but no one knows why this happened. I called the
manufacturer but they were no help either. The info on the box states
that it should work with win. 98. I thought it may be the drive but
tried another one and it failed the same way. I would like to install
a cd/rw drive if I could. I hope you can help. Thank You
