Post subject: USB PCI card problem
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard (more info?)

I recently bought a USB printer for my girlfriend's computer intending
to use the onboard USB connector. I bought the USB backplate connector
and attached the plugs to the sockets on the mainboard. Unfortunately
the connection did not work.(I have tried plugging the connector in
both ways) I later found out via info acquired via the internet that
the USB connectors never worked on the brand of mobo she had (pcchips
m537) anyway. So I bought a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card and installed it
on her machine. This also did not work. The card was recognised as new
hardware by Windows 98SE and the drivers were installed from the CD
supplied. Device manager showed no problems. An error message came up
stating the printer was not communicating with the port. I have tried
swapping the card to another PCI slot. The card was still not
operating. A known working USB device was also connected to the socket
with a working cable but to no avail. Then removed the card & drivers
entirely and installed a 2 port USB 1.1 PCI card - unsurprisingly this
also did not work. Does anyone have any idea why this is?
Machine specs; PCChips M537 mobo
32Mb EDO RAM
Windows 98SE
AMD K6 processor (I think)

Win98 has been know to be problematic with USB 2.0
I have a computer with a USB 2.0 4 port pci card,
with win98SE,WinME,Win200, XP Pro OS's (using OS Selector 8.0)
on one computer.

USB 2.0 has never worked well with USB 2.0.
Me and above works fine.
Computer is old IBM 300PL PIII 500, 256mb, 40gb. HD.

Thanks to both replies to my problem. It is appreciated.
I think that my only solution is going to be another computer. I have
been offered a PII with USB quite cheap (shop owner clearing stockroom
space) and will probably sell/give away the old one. It has given good
service but is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

USB 2.0 will work with 98se. I install 4 ports cards, Belkin and Buslink
into computers all the time and they work fine. The issue is the drivers for
the device attaching to the computer, not the drivers for the USB card.
I always keep my Plextor 2.0 USB drivers with me when I do installs. I have
used them even with 98 First edition.
Check the printer manufacturer to make sure it supports 2.0.
Hope this helps.
