I'm looking for a good boom mic headset to use with
either a desktop or laptop for such things as Skype,
chat, and even voice recognition software such as
Dragon Dictate.

Should one get a USB based model over the standard
analog model?

I'm sure USB is the way to go. I bought an inexpensive Labtec USB
microphone many years ago. Cut off the part that goes from the
analog to digital converter to the microphone. Attached the
microphone right next to the ADC. So there is no analog wire. Custom
made a headset and put that small circuit/microphone on the boom.
Still works great, very clear sound. I also have an external USB
soundcard, maybe that helps too. A good place to ask might be some
gaming groups were players use microphones for communications. Also,
there are lots of reviews on Newegg.

If I were you, I might buy a USB microphone locally. Then make a
very soft recording of my voice in a very quiet environment. Then
play it back with the volume loud. Listen for noise. If your voice
is very clear with very little noise, that's your microphone.
Otherwise, return it and try another one.

Good luck and have fun.
