Post subject: USB 2.0 ? for older mobo
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

Hi all,

I have a SY-P4S-645D DRAGON Lite mobo that I've had for several years
now and I just attained a Lacie USB external b/u drive but when I
connect it, I get this message that "A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged
into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub". I thought atleast the ports on the
backside of the mobo where 2.0 and the ones inside were the 1.1
variety. So I found a SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller driver
that supposedly will "enhance" the controllers on my mobo. But when I
run it, I get this strange apparent error (small box with a red X in a
circle) with only -536870389 in it, then the driver install says that
the driver installed successfully and asks for a reboot. But when I
reboot, the USB devices are still the same ones as before with no
enhanced features. So, are the USB ports (all 6 of 'em) on this mobo
strictly 1.1? I've tried all of the tricks to getting this feature
turned on like disconnecting all USB devices, resetting the FSB back to
100 , and uninstalling the controllers, then letting Windows "find"
them again and trying to select the drivers of the update instead but
it always comes back to the same Windows XP drivers from 2001. Any
ideas?

Try going into Device Manager and deleting all the USB ports and USB
Controllers and reboot your machine. Upon reboot if using Windows your
USB Controllers and Ports will be re-found and added as 2.0

Thanks for the reply Tim,

Nope, no go on that. It just comes back as the SiS 7001 PCI to USB
Open Host Controller with the old Windows XP drivers (2001). Does this
USB controller have the ability to be 2.0 or is it limited to 1.1 only?
Cause if there is no way to fix this, I'm just going to buy myself a
card and use that instead.

If you have USB v1.1 hardware supporting the USB ports, I doubt that any
"magic" driver will convert them to v2.0. Your best bet would be to invest
about $15 in a USB card that plugs into a PCI slot. They can provide up to
five connections - 4 ext and 1 int. I'd recommend one with an NEC chipset,
as I've always had excellent results with them.

Hi there

Here's (I hope) a quick solution to your problem.

First of all, make sure that your motherboard supports usb2.0
otherwise this help will not work.

When re-installing my usb 2.0 driver after a system crashdown I
received Error -536870389. This means that he did not find any EHCI
controller installed, that is, the Hardware was missing (!)

Going to the Bios and loading the defaults solved the problem.
If you have a newer Bios version than you can also check in detail
whether a USB Host controller is enabled or disabled.

If you have an older version, try to update your BIOS and enable the
USB Host Controllers.
