I'm just about done gathering all my assemblies:
P5K-Deluxe
Q6600 CPU
Asus EN6600GT Vid
650 W PSU
Antec P182 Case
2 GB DDR2 Mem.

Now comes the OS. Want to use Win XP Pro upgrade.
Would a OEM Disc be good or should I stick with the retail version?
I know there is no support for the OEM and can only be used once.
I'm retired and have limited funds. Built my present system 5 years
ago and have Win XP home retail SP2, so using an Upgrade will be no
problem as I still have the key. Any thoughts appreciated

Here's XP Pro OEM. AFAIK, you can use it on another computer you build,
just not two at once. Vista is very much more restrictive on that
(besides, it's a bad OS).

If you are not going to be using your old computer any longer, you can
install your present copy of XP.
FWIW, I have never has "issues" reinstalling XP Pro OEM - I just make sure
to use different (valid) license key on each box.

My understanding of the OEM XP (Home or Pro) install is that it is tied
to the machine it is installed on. At activation it takes a
"fingerprint" of
the hardware. If enough of that hardware suddenly changes it will need
intervention by MS. When I have replaced motherboards in the past XP
has refused to start up without MS's intervention. I suspect that if the
same copy is repeatedly used to re-activate they will refuse.

I've never had that problem. I have a XP Home (OEM) disk that was
installed on an older computer I built (back before SP2). I built a new
one, used the same OEM disk and it activated over the internet. The
older computer was (and is) decommissioned.

Once the OS is installed, you have 30 days to activate it. In the
meantime the system will run fine (with lots of nags about activating).

I've had to do this a number of times with the new system as components
were upgraded, added, etc. Each time, it accepted the system, all over
the internet.

I also have a newer system built about 6 months ago that has XP Home OEM
and since both computers are active, I bought a new OS CD for it. I
activated it right away, then I changed a couple SATA disk ports from
RAID capable to SATA with AHCI and I had to call M$ for a (seemed like)
30 digit number.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to M$ activation, but with 3
systems, 2 active ones and lots of hardware changes, I've never been
refused activation.

However....it won't be that easy with Vista. They allow it to be
installed on one computer, period. If you retire the computer and build
a new one, you'll have to buy another Vista OS disk.

Are you talking about Vista ,

"it is tied to the machine "

unless the OEM disk has changed , as I remember post installation is gives
an option to register now or later.

lets say later , I have never had a reminder to register. , you don't have
to get updates , M$ just checks for a valid copy and if ok updates follow

Re OEM support , I have never had a problem that could not be sorted out by
a Google search or posting to this or other groups.

Nope. XP

Individual components (network hardware, hard disk etc.) carry a
weighting. If
enough has changed within a certain period of time then MS require an
explanation as to whether this is a new machine or not.

Yes it does.
I was talking about activation.

I agree apart from when I've had to re-activate.

The Upgrade version of XP Pro is NOT available as an OEM disk. I would
avoid hassels and buy an inexpensive OEM XP Pro SP2 Full disk.

One thing to beware here is clearing the bios.
I was overclocking and the machine wouldn't boot.
I cleared the bios to get it back under control and forgot the date
would be lost.
So when the activation software saw this date change it demanded
immediate
activation.

Interesting. I seem to remember that changing disks & controller was not
significant enough to warrant reactivation.

I believe Vista is more tolerant about hardware changes.

Is it possible to use a non-upgrade disc to upgrade from windows98SE?
I remember that you could upgrade to 98SE using a full installation disc
by deleting or renaming 'win.com' from the windows directory.
I know a clean installation would be better but I have a lot of software
I use where I haven't got installation discs.
'upgrade' windows XP discs seem to be much more expensive than full
instal discs.

Legally you cannot use a OEM version of any MS software on a second machine,
regardless of the fact that the original has been retired. It is supposed to
die with the hardware. This has been true since the beginning, back in the
MS-DOS days. MS is just getting better at stopping the abuse.
