Purely window-dressing for the Q4/fiscal-year announcement tomorrow
morning. Results won't look pretty -- projected 30cents/share loss for
Q4.

When anybody sees a X1000 series card for immediate sale ( NOT
Pre-order, or "Out-of-Stock") from a reputable on-line retail site
( Newegg, ZipZoomFly, etc... NOT Ebay ! ), please post the URL
to this newsgroup.

Also, when anybody sees a Crossfire video-card or motherboard for
immediate sale from a reputable sourec, again please post the URL.

Why would you bother lusting after any of this generation of ATI cards?
They're overpriced and slower than their NVidia competition (if you
could call this gen of ATI cards competition).

All the reviews comming in now all point to the same fact that ATI's
new lineup is either slower or just about the same as NVidias offerings
from months ago, plus Nvidia's cards are alot cheaper.

Shame really, was wanting to upgrade my 9800 Pro this year too. Looks
like a 7800GTX for me.

Only if you have PCI-E motherboard. Otherwise 6800 or X800 series is best
AGP option.

John, I do agree with you about Steam, but it's become more than obvious
from the posts I've read in the last few days that you have some sort of axe
to grind with ATI and/or users of ATI hardware. Let it go. Competition in
the marketplace is a good thing for consumers. In case you haven't noticed,
3dfx is a footnote in history and Matrox has not put out a notable video
card for the masses in quite some time now. This is to say nothing of
others who have ventured into the market in the past. I'm not saying that
ATI is as clean as the driven snow, but no company is. The fact remains,
however, that when you only have two major players in an industry
(especially in the case of video cards), you want to keep both of those
companies going. Failure to do so would translate into lack of innovation
and support. There's not much motivation to progress when you're only
competing against yourself. And from what I've seen of the benchmarks, the
new ATI hardware really isn't bad. For sure, the OpenGL side of things
could still use improvement, but I'm glad that both ATI and nVidia continue
to push each other overall. You should be too.

NightSky, I am leaving the x-post because I'm not sure which group you
replied to. In case you haven't noticed, JL doesn't reply to rational
posts, he's only looking to get a rise out of somebody. He's a fanatic in
every sense of the word. Who else would spout so much anti-ATI tripe in the
ATI group? He doesn't care what you or anybody else thinks; he's trying to
see how many people he can piss off. He won't reply to your post because
you've made too much sense. If he does reply it will be to belittle me for
stating the obvious. I've heard that he knows hardware, but have seen
little evidence to support that theory. Maybe I'm wrong but, in any case, I
agree with your post.

Nope. I have plenty of axe to grind with people/companies that do not
tell the truth, do not deliver when promised, or deliberately conceal
for as long as possible the negative aspects of their product.... the
half-truth syndrome... ATi and Valve currently come to mind. Maybe I
should call it the half-life syndrome instead.

nVidia came prominently and negatively to my mind a year or two ago
with the FX5800 fiasco, THEIR paper launches, and doubtful fiddles
with drivers to improve performance on synthetic benchmarks.

I am. But ATi requires a major change in management and marketing.
Why this sleazy exercise in a public announcement one day before the
Q4 results obviously designed just to bolster the stock price?

From ATi's website, here is the quote from ATi's Oct 5 Press release:-

"Radeon X1800 and Radeon X1300 cards are shipping immediately, with
additional Radeon X1800 configurations and Radeon X1600 cards shipping
later in October and November. "

Shipping immediately -- to whom ???

As of right now (7:45PM) Newegg does not list a single X1000-series
card on their web-site.

Dishonest... yes... Evasive... yes...

Desirable behavior by a major manufacturer of video peripherals... No

Will ATi change their announcement/delivery behavior... probably not,
as long as there are no management changes..and people like you
accept it as normal and buy the product anyway. At least the big OEMs
like Dell have more sense, not to hang around in the sea of broken
delivery promises coming up to the critical Christmas season.

A very bad introduction example to set nVidia for the future.
Although the chorus of hallelujahs (and lots of $$$ and design-in
wins) after the 7800GTX release from both retailers and cutomers
makes it very unlikely that nVidia will backslide into paper on major
product releases any time soon.

God, dude, are you still here trolling this group? Don't you know they are
too busy developing for the XBOX360?

They just had to make a statement for all you computer nerds clamoring,
"Where's my new Dawn Demo, she's so hawt." And if it's in limited retail,
why in the hell would someone post a link? Oh wait, I know why you asked for
one.
It's so you can tell all your friends "I know where to get this
super-secret, hard-to-come-by-super-greatest-video-card. I'm so great and
so krad and very elite. Give me that bag of chips, I want some oil on my
fingers cause I ran outta lube jacking off to how cool I think I am."
You're a dolt.

Generally the high-volume purchasers get first crack, then some of the major
chain retailers, then general distribution.

If you check other retailers who just plug the distribution system you'll
find that the distributers are anticipating having the X1800 in stock on
the 24th. If it's coming from Taiwan by containership (the usual shipping
method for consumer electronics) and has to clear customs that's a
reasonable delay.

> As of right now (7:45PM) Newegg does not list a single X1000-series

Newegg doesn't usually list new stuff until they have an item actually in
their possession--they're among the _last_ to list a new product.

If they don't make the 24th then you might have cause to be upset.
"Shipping" does not mean "shipping direct to end users" and never has for
any computer product. It means "shipping from their factory".

If ATi ends up depending on the Xbox360 license fees for their future
they will be bankrupt in 6 months. BTW, on the subject of Xbox360
license fees, nVidia is doing very well even if they did not
contribute a single piece of technology to the Xbox360. How ? Well,
the incompetents that run the Xbox360 program suddenly got woken up
by retailers and developers pointing out that the lack of backward
compatibilty on the Xbox360 was a VERY BAD DECISION. So M$$ went
crawling to nVidia about 4 months ago for a license to permit the
Xbox360 software to emulate the Xbox chip-set. Most have been some
Hi-fives in the nVidia board-room over that.... Still does not stop
the Xbox360 backward compatibility being a piecemeal kludge, with
'emulation profiles' and the mandatory hard-disk to load them. Should
be very confused and unhappy Xbox360 customers come Christmas.
Not everybody is as smart and technically sharp as you...........

Well, I'm a computer geek. See if I post in the console groups. I guess my
point was too subtle for you, eep.
