Post subject: a8n-sli deluxe bios version

I am a complete newbie system builder, and just finished putting together the following system:

asus a8n-sli deluxe rev 1.02
antec true550eps12v atx
athlon 64 4000+ san diego 90nm
thermaltake k450 heatsink/fan cl-p0075 with shin etsu X23-7783D tim
corsair twinx1024-3200xlpro 2.2.2.5
asus extreme n6600gt 128mb ddr3
western digital raptor wd740 74gb 10000rpm sata
maxtor diamondmax plus 9 120gb 7200rpm pata
sony double layer dvd/cd rw dru-720a
thermaltake tsunami va3000bwa
generic fdd keyboard mouse

When I press the power button, the following sequence of events occurs:

(1) after 5 seconds the asus a8n-sli deluxe splash screen appears (with "Press DEL to enter SETUP" at the bottom)

(2) after another 5 seconds the following screen appears:

SiI 3114 SATARaid Bios Version 5.1.39.
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Silicon image, Inc.

Press <Ctrl+S> or F4 to enter RAID utility

(3) finally, after another 15 seconds, the following information appears:

Diskette Drive A : 1.44M, 3.5 in. Serial Port(s) : 3F8
Pri. Master Disk : LBA, ATA 133, 122GB Parallel Port(s) : 378
Pri. Slave Disk : None
Sec. Master Disk : DVD-RW, ATA 33
Sec. Slave Disk : None
First SATA Master Disk : LBA, ATA 133, 74GB

PCI device listing...
Bus No. Device No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class Device Class IRQ

5 12 0 11AB 4320 0200 Network Controller 3
ACPI Controller 9

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I wish to know the bios version number before I flash the bios with version 1008. How do I find this? When I press DEL to enter the bios setup, the version number does not appear on any of the setup screens (unless I am missing something). I expected it to appear in step (3) above. Conceivably it did appear here but scrolled by so fast that I could not see it; if this is the case, how do I stop the scrolling?

Isn't your current BIOS version listed on the very first screen that
appears during POST? On that screen, you should see the following at
the top of the monitor:

"Phoenix - Award BIOS v6.00PG, An Energy Star Ally, Copyright
1984-2005, Phoenix Technologies, LTD

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe ACPI BIOS revision xxxx"

where xxxx is your current BIOS version

You didn't say where the Raptor's connected, but I assume that it's on
the nVidia SATA controller. Correct? Since you're not using the
SI3114 RAID controller, it should be disabled in BIOS before
proceeding further. Thereafter, you shouldn't see that message about
the SI BIOS on POST.

Note that some have had difficulty using DiamondMax 9 drives with
A8N-SLI series of motherboards.

He get's the wonderful but totally useless Asus A8N picture, with the
text at the bottom of the screen. If I recall correctly, you can press
escape when looking at the picture to switch back to the TEXT Milleron
describes.

If not, press del to enter setup, go to the BOOT settings and disable
the FULL SCREEN LOGO, save settings and reboot. Then you will see the
text and be able to read the BIOS version nr. where Milleron describes
above.

If your SATA drive is connected to the BLACK nForce connector, you can
disable the Silicon SATA RAID in BIOS, and it will skip that bit when
booting.

In the BOOT menu, select Hard Disc Drives and move up the drive you want
to boot from.

Post subject: Re: a8n-sli deluxe bios version [Login to view extended thread Info.]

As you suggested,

SETUP>Advanced>Onboard Device Configuration>Silicon SATA Controller>DISABLED

gets rid of the screen:

-----------------------------------------
SiI 3114 SATARaid Bios Version 5.1.39.
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Silicon image, Inc.
-----------------------------------------

Now, when I turn on the computer (by pushing the power button), the following sequence of events occurs:
(1) After about 5 seconds, a color splash screen (taking up the entire monitor) appears:

----------------------------------
ASUS
motherboard

[picture of motherboard] A8N-SLI
DELUXE

Press DEL to enter SETUP
----------------------------------

Presumably at this time the POST is taking place. Question: Is there some key I should press (other than DEL) to see the POST detail screens? (If I press the DEL key, I am taken directly to the Phoenix - Award BIOS CMOS Setup Utility.)

[On my 7-year-old DELL XPS R450, when I push the power button, a DELL logo splash acreen appears; and if I then press DEL, another screen appears, and I can see the memory test part of the POST taking place; and after this the model numbers of the primary master, primary slave, secondary master, and secondary slave drives appear.]

(2)After the color splash screen has appeared for about 5 seconds, the terminal screen goes black, and if I very quickly press press the PAUSE/BREAK key, the following screen appears:

--------------------------------
NVIDIA RAID IDE ROM BIOS 4.76
Copyright (C) 2004 NVIDIA Corp.
--------------------------------

(3)If I now press the space bar and then very quickly (maybe 1/100 of a second later) press PAUSE/BREAK, I get the (first part of) the following screen

----------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix Technologies, LTD
System Configurations

CPU ID/ucode ID : 0F71/00 Base Memory : 640K
CPU Clock : 2400MHz Extended Memory : 1047552K
L1 Cache Size : 128K
L2 Cache Size : 1024K

Diskette Drive A : 1.44M, 3.5 in. Serial Port(s) : 3F8
Pri. Master Disk : LBA, ATA 133, 122GB Parallel Port(s) : 378
Pri. Slave Disk : None
Sec. Master Disk : DVD-RW, ATA 33
Sec. Slave Disk : None
First SATA Master Disk : LBA, ATA 133, 74GB

PCI device listing...
Bus No. Device No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class Device Class IRQ
0 1 1 10DE 0052 0C05 SMBus Controller 5
0 2 0 10DE 005A 0C03 USB 1.1 OHCI Controller 11
0 2 1 10DE 005B 0C03 USB 2.0 EHCI Controller 10
0 4 0 10DE 0059 0401 Multimedia Device 10
0 7 0 10DE 0054 0101 IDE Controller 11
0 8 0 10DE 0055 0101 IDE Controller 10
1 0 0 10DE 0140 0300 Display Controller 11
5 10 0 1095 3114 0104 RAID Controller 5
5 11 0 104C 8023 0C00 Serial Bus Controller 3
5 12 0 11AB 4320 0200 Network Controller 3
ACPI Controller 9

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
------------------------------------------------------------------

And finally by by pressing the space bar, the rest of this screen appears (since there are more than 25 lines).

Question: What am doing wrong? Why don't I see:

-------------------------------------------------------------
"Phoenix - Award BIOS v6.00PG, An Energy Star Ally, Copyright
1984-2005, Phoenix Technologies, LTD

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe ACPI BIOS revision xxxx"

where xxxx is your current BIOS version
---------------------------------------------------------------

There surely must be an easy way to see the POST detail screens - without having to press PAUSE/BREAK and then SPACE.

I have further questions about flashing the BIOS, but I want to make sure my computer is working like everybody else's first.

Any response will be much appreciated.

Thanks very much. I disabled the FULL SCREEN LOGO and I now get some useful information:

I'm a little confused by this. I can't tell from the time stamps on
your two posts, but I'm deducing that you posted the message that
appears earlier in the thread AFTER this one. That message makes it
look as though you figured out how to view the entire POST. Correct?
Are you still having trouble with the BIOS finding an operating
system?

You're right. I misposted. And I have figured out how to view the entire POST. I was a little surprised to find the BIOS version to be 1002, since I received my A8N-SLI Deluxe from mwave at the beginning of June (newegg was out of these boards at that time), and according to Leif Nordmand Andersen's reply to your post of 28 May, he received version 1007 at about that time. Maybe mwave sent me a board from a batch they received 6 months ago or so. Thanks very much for your replies.

I recommend installing 1011 final. It's the best so far IMHO. I had
problems with 1008, as the hardware monitor stopped functioning
correctly with that one for me. Fixed that, but it was a pain in the ****.

I hope you got it to boot the right harddrive too now =)
