Short answer, it probably doesn't matter at all. During my years with AGP
cards, I never noticed any performance difference no matter what aperture
size I set, on any AGP card I had.

Someone over on Rage3d performed some tests for different AGP aperture sizes
and saw noticeable differences in a Nvidia 6800 series card. Search Rage3d
for AGP Aperture Size Test *VST*.
This test was only for source Counterstrike. In one case the difference due
to AGP aperture size was 40FPS.

I (and others) noticed a big difference in BF2. My default of 64MB was
causing all kinds of stuttering. It was unplayable. When I finally
increased it to max of 256MB, all the stuttering went away.
A larger aperture just gives the card access to more memory (the PC's) than
what it has on board. For example, the video driver can cache unused
textures in the aperture memory. When it needs to use those textures, it
can then just pull them out of the RAM and push them into the card, without
having to load them from disk.
If you have a lot of RAM, then go ahead and increase the aperture. It's not
guaranteed to help if the game isn't demanding enough, or if your card has
plenty of memory already. But if you don't have a lot of RAM, then
increasing it can actually hurt performance... by increasing the aperture,
you decrease the amount of RAM available to the OS and the game itself and
you can cause thrashing. >> Stay informed about: What aperture size to use for nVidia (PNY) GeForce 5100 FX.. |

I had the same experience as RF (with BF2), but I increased my AGP aperture
size to 512MB.

Not quite true. Unlike cache or shadow ram, setting the AGP aperture
does not set aside or reserve physical memory, it is only used if
necessary. Applications can and do use all available memory, regardless
of what the AGP aperture setting is.
What does increase, as AGP aperture size increases, is the GART, the
table that tells driver where the remapped memory is. It can get large
at the 512 setting.

Well, that would explain that.
