I am looking for a 2-way or 4-way system, preferably based on Athlon X2
on AM2 sockets. I cant find any motherborads that contains 2 or 4
sockets, do they exists or do I have to look for another configuration
of the similar type?

Additionally, I am looking for a good motherboard for server use, more
specifically high performance server use, such as database, proxy, web
servers, and similar stuff. Any references to articles comparing such
types of motherboards are of interrest.

Socket AM2 is only for single-sockets. For multiple sockets, you need to
get Socket F motherboards, and consequently you need to get either
Opteron or Athlon FX.
