The CRV3 lithium battery would have the longest life for a non-chargeable
battery.
Ni-MH rechargeable batteries last longer that AA alkaline batteries. The
advantage is you don't throw them away after 30 minutes. (Get two sets,
charge while using one set)
The AC adapter is best, never runs out of juice. But then you are tied to a
wall socket.
And Yes, it is normal for a digital camera to run through Alkaline batteries
like water.
