Post subject: Which brand and model LCD monitor

I'm about to buy two LCD monitors. One 17" and a 19"
Interested in opinions relating to who is setting the pace for refresh rates,
picture quality and dead pixel issues.
Basicly I'm not after the cheapest but the best value for money out of the models available in Australia at the moment.

Look for the Samsung line.

913V II

Viewing Angle(H/V) / Angle de visionnement (H/V) 160/150 (CR>5)

Response Time / Temps de réponse 12ms

Interface / Interface Analog

930B

Type / Type a-si TFT/TN

Viewable Area / Espace de visionnement 19"

Pixel Pitch / Pixels 0.294mm

Brightness(Typ.) / Luminosité (typ.) 300 cd/m2

Contrast Ratio / Rapport contraste 700:1

Viewing Angle(H/V) / Angle de visionnement (H/V) 160/160 (CR>5)

Response Time / Temps de réponse 8ms

Interface / Interface Analog/Digital

930BF

Pixel Pitch / Pixels 0.294mm

Brightness(Typ.) / Luminosité (typ.) 300 cd/m2

Contrast Ratio / Rapport contraste 700:1

Viewing Angle(H/V) / Angle de visionnement (H/V) 160/160 (CR>5)

Response Time / Temps de réponse 4ms (Gray-to-Gray)

Interface / Interface Analog/Digital

A few things you need to know:

- an LCD monitor looks best at its native resolution, 1280x1024 in the
case of a 17 or 19" unit. Refresh rate 60-70Hz.

-lower response times, measured in milliseconds are better. Lower than
16ms should be fine if you happen to be a gamer, or movie buff. Due to
differing testing methodologies, you'd do well to take these figures
with a grain of salt.

-entry level models have a single analog input. Higher end models offer
an additional digital, DVI, input. My eyes see little or no difference.

-In Korea, Samsung offers a zero dead pixel warranty. I do not know if
their policy in Oz is similar. If I were you, I'd look around for a
seller with a generous return policy, in the event of dead, or always-on
pixels.

Once you know what to look for there it's easy to see the difference. DVI is
much sharper and less prone to faults.

OK, if I go with DVI and a decent refresh rate, who offers the best value
for money?

That's a very difficult question to answer because whoever answered it would
have to be familiar with a large range of models that are currently on the
market. Even then it would be down to their opinion and I'd imagine you'd
get very different opinions. It might be worth looking through a few mags.
I've found acers to be quite good with a 3 year warranty and pretty fast
turn around for the ones I've had go faulty (I'm in melbourne). I would say
with the price difference it would be worth buying a DVI monitor but if you
don't have a DVI video card it's probably not worth upgrading that. The DVI
monitors will work with standard VGA plugs until you upgrade your computer
or vga card.

While all that is important to consider, I think the top bit is set on
the basis of quality of the monitor itself.

I have always had good service from Viewsonic. I have only used their
CRTs but I would expect the same from their LCDs. When it comes time,
I am going to buy a 21" Viewsonic LCD. I will pay more but it will
last longer and give me much better service.

Life's too short to waste scrimping for your kid's inheritance. Get
the best and enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the replies , I suppose I really want quality because
I don't plan on replacing them every year. It's a given that I am after
DVI to take advantage of the 256Mb Radeon 9700 Pro video cards I use
It seems LCD are not expensive when 2 years ago I paid $600 for a
19" CRT monitor?
Currently I think 95% of 19" LCD monitors are well under $600, it just
comes down to value for money...
I have a contact that recommmends Dell, although in the past another
company usually make the monitors for them anyway. I wonder which
company makes their LCD's?
