I've tried to burn some dvds with files >2 gigs but I was unable to do
so using Nero. Some of the files were data, some video, some large
Rars. I'd get an error message. Anyone know how to burn large files?
It is no problem when I make a video DVD, but that doesn't suit my
needs most of the time.

Also, when I need to throw out a CD or dvd I try to destroy them
first.
I was coloring them with black markers, then I'd break them. I have a
shredder but the disk is too thick to go through. So for kicks I put
one in the microwave oven for 3 seconds. Got a nice puff of purple
arcing, a little smoke and stench but nothing too bad. The dvd looked
very bad. I'd guess unreadable. Any one done this and have any
thoughts? I'm not worried about the microwave. It is not very good
and I'm just waiting to get another on.
The disk also "delaminates" and can be separated into 2 pieces. I may
be being over cautious but hell you never know. Opinions?

Thanks. I"ve been very lucky so far, most of my questions were
answered and no flames, but I'm sure it is only a matter of time.

Doesn't the error message tell you to burn the disk using UDF format?
Anyway, thats all you need to do.

The way I normally do it is to scratch the top (yes, not the writing
surface) with a pair of scissors. The reflective coating then comes off
which is where the data is stored. The clear coating on the bottom is
to protect from scratches but the top is very weak.

A couple of zigzags will render them useless for normal data (i.e. DoD
will probably be able to get something off them, but if you're doing
anything they'd disagree with I'd rather you follow my advice and get
caught Smile ).

Cheers,

Andy

This is true for CDs, but would do absolutely nothing for DVDs. With a
DVD, the reflective layer is sandwiched between two layers of
polycarbonate. Scratch away at the top and it will still play fine.

I've got a big pair of scissors. I just cut 'em in half!
