I have a Cannon Powershot S30 and a USB memory stick that I have just
bought.

What drivers do I need to put on the memory stick to enable me to plug it
into any machine and get the photos from my Cannon camera?

Depending on the OS (XP best, 2000/ME not that good) I'd say you only
need drivers for the S30 ...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You don't need drivers on the memory stick. What driver you need to install
on the computer depends on how you plan to move the data between the
computer and the memory stick. For example, if you are using a card reader,
the driver for that reader must be installed. In some cases, Windows will
do the installation automatically.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

no so sure about this my usb stick needs a driver for win98
not required for win 2000 or XP
the memory stick acts as another hard drive so any files can be tranfered to
it ie jpeg or any other type of file for that matter

hope this helps<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The question was about what driver is needed ON a memory stick. Every
drive, of whatever sort, must have a driver - in the ocmputer. As I said,
it may load automatically in background, or the user may have to install it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

One USB driver accesses anything on the port.

That's intreresting. Then why do the makers of various devices write their
own drivers?

I understand that there is a driver for each device, and the device can be
moved from one USB port to another without reinstalling the driver.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have installed a driver for my FujiFilm 1400. Without installing anything
else I have used it on my Fuji 2600, Kyocera S5, Pentax Optio 550 and my SD
drive dongle.

The install CDs come with software to view, edit and play with the pictures
but no drivers install from any of the CDs since the original Fujifilm 1400
unit. The language is all the same on the USB cable and it only take one
driver to do that. You are probably looking at profile tables or Device
Control Blocks that specify personalities of your external units.

The issue is childishly simple to control .. check the system driver settings
for yr device and see if the proprietary USB drivers from Microsoft show up if
you are a windows user .. I'll bet you that in 99.9% of the cases they will be
the ones you get in the info window Smile

Surely not? I have a 128MB memory stick, but it needs a driver
to make it into a useable drive (format, read/write enable and
so on). This presumably comes with the memory stick. If it's
already seen by the system as a drive, then you only need the
Canon transfer software which comes with the camera.

That's right. If you're able to do that then the memory
stick's software is already operative and you'd only
need the camera's software to transfer the pictures to
the stick, which is just another drive after all!
