I'm building a media center around the Hauppauge PVR-250 card and need
the best quality s-video video out that I can find.

I understand that the ATI Radeon cards have decent S-Video. Is the
S-Video out the same between the 9500, 9600 and 9800?

I will not be doing any gaming on this box. It is strictly a Tivo
replacement.

TIA

In that case go for the Matrox G450eTV unless you want to spend for a
pro-quality board.

But personally, I'd just get a Tivo--having lived with one for a while I
don't see any PC-based solutions that provide the same functionality.

I guess you didn't see the specifications of Beyond TV 3 and the Fire
Fly remote control that they make to use with it? i own 4 Tivo's, two
pre series 2 and two series-2. my goal is to replace the Tivo fee's
with my Media center PC, which I am in the process of putting a parts
list together.
I am going with two of the PVR-250 cards, I have read nothing but very
good comments on it. The Beyond TV-3 software will give my Media
Center PC all the same and some better added features over my Tivo's.
It has smart commercial skipping as well as every other feature of
Tivo.
The main thing i am stuck on is the case. I don't see one that I think
is perfect for the job yet. Anyone who has put one of these together
and loves the case they used, I would like to hear from you.

I don't see what difference some fancy remote makes. I doubt that the "Fire
Fly" does a tenth what a 75 buck Sony does, but in any case a remote can
only tell the application to do what it's capable of doing. I installed
BeyondTV, played with it, decided that it was pants compared to a hacked
Tivo, and tossed it.

You're not going to get 8 tuners in a media center PC. If your only
objective is to avoid the Tivo fees then just pay them off upfront. It
will cost you less than a media center PC.

Got one. It's OK, but it's not the same quality as a DirecTivo tystream.
And _way_ poor compared to HD.

See how you like that "smart commercial skipping" when it decides to skip to
the end of the show.

What features are you looking for? There are numerous cases aimed at that
market.
