I used to read that LCDs lasted a long time , longer than CRTs. Now I
read that CRTs last longer than LCDs mainly cause the back light burns
out.

So how hard is it to change these backlights? They usually say it
lasts 3 years. I dont see a million sites talking about changing the
back light so I assume its virtually impossible.

Its not that big of a deal if you spend $150 like I did on a LCD but
if you spent 400-700 Id be pissed if it burned out in 3 years.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to how their casings are
put together, but if held by screws rather than
friction-tabs, it may be more a matter of patience than
anything else, patience disassembling and patience finding
the replacement lamp.

I suspect that the "3 year" rating is a bit more like a
half-life, half-brightness period rather than complete
failure... so if that's the case it would depend on how
bright you need it to be. If you can stretch 5 years out of
it you might then prefer a new technologically modern
display instead of the old one bright(er) again.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
