This used to be a separate hardware function, but in today's electronic
devices characters are generated by firmware table lookup, and inserted into
the LCD display's video signal. You are unlikely to be able to fix this.
I'd never be the one to say it was impossible.
First, try the trick of resetting to factory defaults. If that fails, take
the batteries out and let the camera sit for several days, until it no
longer remembers the time, then power it up and see if it has come back to
its senses. One way the failure you describe can happen is with an error in
the flash memory. Try selecting a different language option, or if possible
re-flashing your camera with a new version of the firmware. There is some
risk with re-flashing, and you may lose functionality completely.
If the problem is with the video signal insertion, you may be able to spot
the problem if you take the camera apart and look for cracked cables, loose
connectors. After the camera is open, turn it on and gently nudge things
(with something non-conductive!) to see if you get characters.
Who knows? I had a friend once who repaired a TV set when he was 10 or so,
so you might be the lucky one.
Come to think of it, hold off on taking your camera apart; perhaps someone
in this group has experienced the same problem and solved it.
