Is it correct that AMD CPUs are more likely
to be paired with VIA chipsets than Intel?
Does a processor have it's own chipsets:
northbridge (ridge?) and southbridge? I'm really
confused. I was told to avoid AMDs because
the ATI card that I have doesn't do well with
VIA chipsets and other people are saying that
it is easy to get an AMD with a Pentium chipset.
thanks : -)

Yes. Even if you weren't a bettin' man, that would be safe money.

It's not possible to get a board sporting an Intel chipset to run an
AMD processor.

AMD boards will have chipsets from VIA (KT400 is one example), SIS or
nVidia (nForce and nForce2 are nVidia chipsets).

Pentium boards will have chipsets from VIA, Intel and SIS at the
least, but the VIA and SIS chipsets are different for Intel boards
than for AMD boards.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

WHA? Yes it is more common for an AMD mobo to have a VIA chipset, but you
can get SIS ones just as easy. You can not get an AMD with a pentium
chipset for obvious reasons. If you mean Intel, possibly but im unsure of
that. Overall, every chipset has its problems and no single one is gonna be
perfect. But if the ATI problems have you worried, get a SIS chipset
instead.

Wow that's confusing as hell

Yes
Amd Chips use outsouced chipsets in their motherboards more so than intel
does..

Via do make chipsets for intel chips but big blue sells their chipsets at a
loss (makes motherboards cheaper and guarantee's that they will hold the
market)

Avoid whatever..
it all should work together
amd with anything
intel with anything<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well, except for the i430TX, that is:). Nowadays, no.

I currently run an ATI 9800Pro on a EpOX 8KRA2+ mobo (VIA KT600 chipset)
with no problems whatsoever. Over the last 2 years I have used nothing but
ATI cards on mobos using VIA KT266, 333, 600 chipsets as well as 2 different
nVidia nForce2 mobos with absolutely no problems.Don't worry about your
vidcard working with a VIA chipset mobo. It should work just fine.

I don't see hoe one person's good experience would
give anybody confidence. Does he plan on capturing
analog video? In any case ATI's tech support sucks.
In fact it is the worst of any I've ever dealt with. 30
days from purchase, no exceptions, even if you have
to wait to install it for some reason. I'm not knocking
their product, I use an ATI card myself, but not for
analog video, and I can't say that their return policy
is bad. They seem more willing to do an RMA than
take a tech call.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
