folks i hope you could help me on this...

I've had my pc for 16 months now and i didn't had any problems
with it until today- i switched it on, saw the led light up, heard the
familiar whine of the cpu fan and... no beep, no picture on the
monitor.

Well i forced-closed it (by pressing the ON button for 5 seconds)
and then rebooting it again to no avail.

So what i did was I opened the case, cleaned the few dusts off,
replaced the battery (CR2016) with a fresh one, checked the jumpers
and connections (especially the small speaker), looked for anything
burned (there was none.) And then turned it on but still no beep or
anything on the monitor.

Well i can say all the peripherals have supply (DVD, HD and
floppy) because the dvd-drove closes and opens. I see the cpu fan, and
fan at the video card whirring so there must be power at the mobo.

My diagnosis for now is that the board must have given up after 16
months (and i think there are a lot of cases like this for the k7s5a)
or the cmos must have gone bad. Initially i've had a few glitches with
it (the cmos) when my pc was newly assembled, i posted it here: (
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=checksum+owyn+group:alt.comp.periphs...inboard)

What's your take on it? If anyone need more details i'll post it
later. I hope you guys could give me your own diagnosis about it,
thanks... (and sorry for the dry english, it's not my first language
hehehe Smile )

I've come across 2 mbs < one k7s5a and one k7s5a pro > that had failed
in the same way. Careful inspection of both showed had pooched out
capacitors near the cpu. Both replaced with ASROCK k7s8xe mbs.

I thought the battery should be a CR2032., i dont know what the difference
is between that and the battery you stated.
Try clearing the cmos with the electric cable pulled out then try again.

i turned mine on this week and the cd rom lighted, the hard drive
lighted up and the power light came on, but the monitor said no
signal.
i kept shutting it down and turning it back on. then i left it cycling
the cd rom and the hard drive light on and in about a minute it
booted.
i figured it was the power supply as i had it about 21 months running
a k7s5a with a 1gig thunderbird 266. i put in a new power supply and
no difference. i had to play with it to boot but once booted it ran
but acted like a virus.
i finally changed the fsb to 100 and it runs ok with an occasional
lockup at 750mz.
the first 1 gig i put in would only run at 750. it was replaced by the
dealer.
i ordered a thoroughbred xp 1800 from newegg yesterday.
you can try just letting it run a minute, or keep turning it on and
off. once holding the power button in trying to turn it off it booted.

well, i was about to write the board was indeed dead, and that for
roughly a year and a half it served it's purpose and that with ECS
being relatively inexpensive i kinda expected it's quality/reliability
but no:

It turns out the problem was a conked out DDR stick (apacer 128
2100)! So my rig is ok now after simply replacing the dud 128 apacer
with a single 256 stick...

a few questions though: there are 2 ddr slots in the k7s5a, does it
matter where in those two you put the ddr stick? (And i also I decided
to get 1 256 stick instead of 2 128s as i believed that a single 256
is slightly faster- was i right? my friend argued that i should get 2
128s because in case 1 fails, i still have one working...)

i also replaced my cpu fan from a 7200 RPM global win to a
variable thermaltake 7+ - would the lowest speed setting good enough
when playing dvds? any forst hand experience here?

.... in regards to the battery it seems that the CR2016 and 2032 both
works. the difference is that the other will last longer and is
physically thicker...
