I've always had difficulties deleting old BIOS .exe and .bin files after
saving and then extracting them when doing bios upgrades for my Abit IC7. I
assumed this was just an Abit quirk. However, I recently upgraded a friends
Intel board and now have their self-extracting BIOS .exe stuck of my
desktop. Like the Abit files, any attempt to delete it is met with a 5
second delay, before Windows reports an "Error Deleting File or Folder" and
the message "Cannot delete [BIOSfile]: It is being used by another person or
program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
Can anyone shed any light on why exactly this happens, and any simple
work-arounds for deleting the problem files? >> Stay informed about: Can't delete old BIOS files |

Jeff,
Try this program. It's worked well for me.
GiPo@MoveOnBoot Utility from www.gibinsoft.com. They have a free version
and a Professional Edition with a 30 day free trial. As far as I can tell
the main difference is that the free version will only allow you to delete
one file at a time while the Pro version will allow you to delete numerous
files. It also allows you to move or copy files that otherwise won't
cooperate. For the home user with just the occasional problem the free
version works just fine.
Hope this helps.

Quickest way I've found is to open a command window in the folder you're
working in and use the time-honoured old DOS "del" command. Good old DOS...

of course XP does not have realmode dos
so if you can't delete if in from windows explorer
you can't delete it from the emulated dos window either
you will need to find where the app is loading
then shut it down
for starters you can run msconfig and look in the startup group >> Stay informed about: Can't delete old BIOS files |

Hi philo -
Generally it's Explorer having the file on the Desktop that's causing the
problem.
The couple of times I've had this problem (since learning never to save
files to my Desktop... choosing, rather, to save them to another folder on
my hard disk):
.. Open up a CMD prompt and, as Richard states, navigate to the Desktop
folder where the file is located.
.. Manually attempt the delete.
.. If the delete succeeds: gold.
.. If the delete fails... click back to the desktop, leaving the CMD window
open. Ctrl-Alt-Del and, on the Processes tab, stop the Explorer process.
The desktop icons should disappear from view. Click on the CMD window and
manually delete the file... this time it should depart without further fuss.
.. Close the CMD window.
.. Right-click on the Desktop and click Refresh if the Explorer process
hasn't already restarted by itself.

Forgive the misinformation (doesn't apply to XP).
Instead, Ctrl-Alt-Del again. This time click on File then New Task (Run)
and type Explorer in the dialog box to restart the Explorer process.
Sorry for the confusion.

Er, yes you can. Been there, done it. Loads of times.

The bug in XP SP2 simply prevents you from deleting legacy executables -
whether or not they are actually loaded at the time...
> for starters you can run msconfig and look in the startup group
Or just open a command window and delete the file from there, as originally
suggested.

What's up with your latest obsession with 'skid marks'? Is The Pit running
low on tissue again?

Maybe we can search the back closets and see if there's some old Sears
Roebuck catalogs still lurking about... historically they 'did' the job when
funds were low and debts were high...

He probably saw my reference to them in the reply to "Shooter" on the
Flashmenu thread, and has got rather obsessed by the word...
Sometimes I worry about our linguistically disjointed friend...

Richard -
That's about the best explanation I could have hoped for. Linguistically
disjointed (a mouthful to even type...) is a perfect description.
Though I think we should keep him. Known universe and all...

Hi Philo,
I'm an old DOS type and I've found that you are partially correct. Sometimes
opening a CMD window does not work. When That happens I boot into "Safe
mode Command Prompt" and I can do virtually anything I could under DOS.
AAMOF I use the "Safe Mode, Command Prompt" boot to solve many unable to
delete problems and to conduct rapid file searches by using the "dir"
command.

ROTFLMAO!!!
"disjoint" ...
Spend a 'day' in the gallerys of our congressional "halls" ...
maybe too ...
your 'house'.
I'd think my "disjointed_ness" fails =miserably=,
in the face of our Pol's writings & utterances.
