is this still a viable combination? if not what is the last stepping/ghz-age
that supports smp?

Depending on your needs and if you can source a dual-Athlon motherboard,
sure. I believe the Asus A7M266-D and a few Gigabyte boards are still being
sold. Dual-Opteron boards have recently arrived here in North America. The
MSI K8D Master and the Asus SK8N come to mind. The Opteron 240 series is
supported by both of these boards. Figure on a minimum of $850 USD for the
motherboard and two processors.

Tyan Tiger S2640 and a few others too.

know this is one of the boards that does it.
