Hello, on the computer of my friend, the dvd burner, doesnt burn. The
problem is like this:

He has a P4 2.6 512 memory. we tried 2 different cdburners with the same
result. We use Nero vision express 2. When its trying to burn, the first 15
minutes work, but after that the counter will stopr of the overall. I
noticed also that the CPU in the taskmanager of nero vision express use 99%
.. I have a slower system and it works fine. Can someone pls explain to me
how to reduce this? I tried a couple of things. I closed all the unused
processes. its just onlt that one program. Also the virtual memory is set to
2.5 times 512.

Thanks in advance

Irlan

If the CPU usage is nearing 100% when burning then i'd guess that the drive
is operating in PIO mode and not DMA Mode 2.

DMA Mode 2 is the standard for a modern DVD writer, PIO is an older standard
which will make CPU usage high.

Open the System applet in the Control Panel and open the Device Manager -
it's on the Hardware tab.
Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers entries.
Is the DVD writer on the Primary or Secondary IDE Channel?
Right-click the appropriate IDE channel and select Properties.
Look on the Advanced Settings tab.
Does it report the Current Transfer Mode which the DVD writer is using?
If it's Ultra DMA Mode 2 then all is well.

If however it reports PIO mode then you have a problem.
Try changing the Transfer Mode from the drop-down list, maybe reboot the pc
and then check Device Manager again.

If you can't get the DVD writer to work in DMA Mode 2 then i'd check that
the pc has the correct chipset drivers installed.
You'd need to visit the website of the motherboard manufacturer to check
what the latest chipset drivers for the motherboard are.

I run an AMD system but have seen this problem before with Intel systems.
Another possible solution was to check for the Intel Application
Accelerator.
I've seen (a few) reports of the Intel Application Accelerator needing to be
uninstalled to get DMA Mode working.
(I'm an AMD user so i'd recommend that you research this yourself).

Here's a link to get you going <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/3qht6" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/3qht6</a>

Run the ASPIcheck utility too.

Ensure that the ASPI layer is installed correctly - it's something that
Nero's own ASPI layer 'may' have corrupted.

You can easily find the ASPIcheck utility on <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.google.com" target="_blank">www.google.com</a> or point your
browser to my webspace and download it from there.

My webspace: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.warwound.dsl.pipex.com/files/ASPIcheck.zip" target="_blank">http://www.warwound.dsl.pipex.com/files/ASPIcheck.zip</a> it's a
180KB zip archive.
