Post subject: dvd quality on pc
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

hello

recently i've installed some dvd drive in my pc and try to watch some dvd
movies.
everything is fine except the quality of movies.
the problem is that in some cases i can see the small blocks on some parts
of screen
they are very similar to that which divx creates when movie is in lower
quality.
this effect isnt very strong but it is visible in some cases which makes me
very angry Smile

is this related to videocard or drivers or just software decoders are so bad
comparing
to 'home theater' systems?

i have gf4mx with latest drivers and tried with windvd powerdvd nvdvd and
cineplayer
(there are differences between each player but very little)

also i've read some info saying that gf cards (and also radeon and few
others) have mpeg2
accelerations (if not full then some parts: motion compensation or iDCT)
which should
make rather good dvd quality.

Thanks
Tomasz

DVD video is 720 x 480 ... if you are watching it full screen or have
stretched the view window larger than that the quality will degrade
somewhat.
