Post subject: dvi-a 2 dvi-d adaptor?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

I have a PC with onboard video that has a female DVI-D jack. I have a
cable set that has male DVI-A on both ends. My moniter's female jack
is DVI-A, even though it only accepts digital via that connection. I
just need to plug in the DVI-A cable into the PC's DVI-D jack. The
cable has 4 extra pins around the alignment bar and the PC's video
jack only has a slot for the alignment bar but no holes for the 4
analog pins to fit into.

Does anyone know if they make a simple adaptor that will have dummy
holes for the 4 analog pins (since I won't be using them), on one end
and just plugs into a DVI-D jack on the other end?

Of course, I could just drill these holes myself into the jack (risky,
I'd rather not), OR, I could try to reach in and break off the pins
from the cable, but, I'd rather just use a manufactured adaptor if
they make such a thing.

Thanks, littleberry

You may be looking for the wrong thing, as there technically
is no such thing as a "DVI-A" connector. The version of
DVI that carries both analog and digital video is "DVI-I,"
while the digital-only version is the "DVI-D." By the way,
it's hard to imagine that your monitor would provide a DVI-I
input and yet not accept analog video on that connection.
"DVI-A" is a term that's unfortunately cropped up in a number
of places, but that name doesn't exist per the standard. (There's
no "analog only" DVI, which is what "DVI-A" would mean per
the naming convention.)

Anyway, what you really need to search for is a DVI-I to
DVI-D adapter. A quick Google search didn't turn up any
such cable, but now that you have the right names maybe you
can find something. Or you could always use something like
this:

....along with a male-to-male DVI-D cable.
