I used to hate it too until I found myself in a job that required frequent
entry of numeric data. With regular use I found myself learning to touch
type it (a useful skill but most people wouldn't need) and now I'm
thankful that it's on just about every keyboard. It is used more
frequently in a business setting but I have little doubt that it remains
unused on most home computers.
My local computer store now stocks a number of keyboards without the
numeric keypad so at least there is choice.

USB numeric keypads are available.

Left handed touch typists have no problem touch typing the characters of
the right hand so it follows that the placement of the numeric keypad
wouldn't matter to someone who has learned to touch type it. The usual
placement does seem more appropriate for a right handed user though.
