Post subject: Where to find BIOS revision history???
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>supermicro (more info?)

Hello,

I can see that there is a new BIOS for my X5DAL-TG2, however other then the fact
that it was released on June 30th, 2003 I know nothing about what has been
fixed, etc. Most manufacturers list their revision histories online, however I
see it is not the fact with Supermicro even though boards cost sometimes X times
more then competitors.
Does anyone know where it is possible to find revision history for SuperMicro
boards or X5DAL-TG2 in particular?

Thank you in advance,
Sergei

Sergei,
My first question, especially in regard to BIOSes, is why? Is there
something wrong with your system that you're hoping to fix through
upgrading your BIOS? I never understand some people's fanatical
devotion to having an up to the minute BIOS. Most BIOS fixes fix some
strange little problem that is only encountered in the rarest of
circumstances, frequently when upgrading other hardware. (See ASUS
revision histories sometime) Rant done.
Not that that is out of the way, I'm not aware that Supermicro publishes
bios revision histories. I'm not sure why they choose not to, but I
wouldn't let that bother you. If you want to, grab the most recent
BIOS. I have never known them to release problematic BIOSes. If you
fire an e-mail in to Tech Support at Supermicro, they could probably
tell you. They're usually very responsive.
Lastly, I'm not sure what you're referring to in regard to Supermicro
boards costing X times more than competitors. If you're comparing
apples to apples, they're usually the same cost or less. They're almost
always cheaper than Intel, and usually about the same as ASUS and
others, as long as features match. You can't say it's bad the the board
you got is more expensive than, say the P4C800-E, IC7 or NEO-FISR or
something, they're not even in the same category.

I can understand why a manufacturer will not want to post revision histories,
they may be afraid that people will start flash their BIOSes each time a new
one is released and more problems for tech support would appear. However,
SuperMicro is not on the market for many "overclockers" or kids who flash their
board with new BIOS 15min after it is released. I guess that knowing if there
is some advantage in some bios update is essential for mission critical server
installations.

Again, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." If there is some glaring
problem that is giving you headaches that can be fixed through a BIOS
flash, by all means, fix it, otherwise, leave well enough alone,
especially in a mission critical situation. I can't tell you the number
of times that machines have been damaged or crippled by a botched BIOS
flash. Why would you risk that if it weren't absolutely necessary?
