Hi,

I have an Olympus C120 Digital Camera and it has been fine with taking
the card out, putting it in a USB reader and transferring the pix to the HD.

Somehow this time when I put it back in the camera it wants me to either
Turn it off or Format it. I have tried to format it in the camera but
it then says Card Error.

When in the USB reader I can see it, transfer files to it and back again
etc so it has a format on it.

What can I do to get the camera to format or read it. It does read the
smaller 8MB card I also have so the camera is fine.

Thanks.,

Rock

Put it in the card reader.
Right click on the drive # it is in and format it.
Then put it in your camera, format it again even if you have to take one
picture.

There are several Digital Image recovery programs (google).

I had a similar experience with my 3040Zoom. I removed the card and
inserted it several times and it worked again without Formatting.

I suspect that the contact between the camera and the Card was poor but
between the Card Reader and the Card was okay.

This made it an electrical issue. With the small amount of current used,
any foreign matter could cause a high resistance connection.

There could be some dirt in the camera's card slot that keeps the card from
making good contact. Blow the slot out with clean air, for example canned
air.

Have you tried formatting it with your computer when it's in the card
reader?

I have a homepage
http://ii.net/~farmerjim/
It may be ordinary but it's better than nothing.

The cardinal rule is that never format the card unless you have a
problem. In that event you always let ONLY the camera format your
card and never let the computer format your card.

Thanks for the help..

I did all the above and used some recovery tools to delete and reformat
the card at FAT 16 which it now is again.

I still have all access to it in the PC and it is still the same 'Card
Error' in the camera.

The points must be okay in the camera as it reads and write to an 8MB of
the same SANSDISK brand fine.

I am not sure what to do about this.

The same thing happened with the previous 128 I had of the same brand. I
took it back and they gave me this one. This has been fime for about 4
months now.

I have never tried to format it and always careful about in/out of the
cam and reader.

Is it not correct that the card MUST be OK if it reads/writes in the PC ?

Thanks again

Sounds like good logic. Perhaps the connectors in your camera are loose or
flakey/dirty. Perhaps some software in your camera has a hard time handling
larger memories. Try filling the card up with files and reading them back in
your computer read/writer.

By chance, does the camera demand that the card have a sub-directory off of
the root directory for the pictures to be written to? I remember reading
somewhere in my manual that all cards had to have this sub-directory or
there would be errors indicated. I don't have the manual in front of me so
this is strictly from memory.

That is what the camera formatting does. His camera won't format the
cartridge.

I have managed to recover smartmedia cards using a Sandisk USB reader and
the SMPREP utility that
was supplied with it. Possibly not a lot of use to you but you might know
someone with one nearby ?.
This recovered a card belonging to a friend of mine that had been the victim
of Windows 2000.

I suspect the card is fine and the format is defective. If I was
getting an error on the card and the camera would not format it, then
I would be formatting on every other device I could find hoping that
eventually I'd find one that the camera will accept. And that is
including downloading recovery software and trying it.
