Anyone done it ?

And how would i go about doing it, material needed and parts needed ?

Its the pin on the top row, in the notch position, its a pin needed i
think as the disk wont boot anymore, not even on secondary NOTHING Sad

Any help.

Basically you use the connector off a dead drive.

Not a particularly difficult operation if you have done quite a bit
of that sort of soldering, but not something to try learning on.

 > Its the pin on the top row, in the notch position, its a pin needed i think

Nope, its just one of the ground pins.

Sorry did not read the diagram right, it seems from what i can see Pin
19 is broken ?

I'am going to give it another go and see if it works, might have set
the conectors wrong for the drive i will test it Smile

Would give me another 40 gigs of storage, which i need.

Temporary solution find a piece of wire the right size, poke it through the
connector shell from the back and solder it to the right pad. Permanent
solution, find a connector (either buy one or cannibalize a dead drive) and
replace the existing one.

If you're not _real_ comfortable with a soldering iron though find someone
who is to do the work.

Nope. DD11' and DD3 are 2 out of 16 wires
on the IDE cable used to read and write to
registers on the ATA device.

(There are other wires/pins too, other than the DDx
wires, and these are mostly for control signals. In
addition you of course have all the grounded wires.)

With these pins broken, your ATA device probably (and
hopefully) won't pass the self diagnostics run during
the reset protocol. Hence you won't hear from it when
listening to it from the host side.

It's possible to solder new pins in place, if you have
access to such pins. If you don't you can order them
online from companies like ELFA and RS and such.

I would suggest that you'd be carefull when you do the
actual soldering though. "Soldering tools" (I have no
idea what it's called in english...) can often produce
massive amounts of electromagnetic radiation when turned
on and off, which will often be the case when you sit and
work, and the thermostate kicks in. For all I know, this
may actually damage the drive. But I'm not sure.

Good luck

Usually called soldering stations in english.

Oh bullshit.

Corse it doesnt. And you would normally need to remove
the logic card from the drive to do that sort of repair anyway.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It's called a "torx". You can get a nice set of miniature Torx drivers that
is just right for taking disks and the like apart at Sears.

Not as separate items--you'd have to get a new connector and pull one of the
pins out.

 > And when i solder what kind of solder ?

Rosin core.

 > And if i did fix it would i trust the drive or not ?

That's up to you. If it's holding the financials for IBM probably not. If
it's holding your porn collection then maybe.

Nope, you have to get the connector off an old dead drive.

If you have to ask a question like that, you shouldnt
be doing it yourself. Pay a TV tech to do it for you.

 > And if i did fix it would i trust the drive or not ?

If the repair is done competantly it will be as good as new.

If it isnt, all bets are off.
