Post subject: Do I need to flash?

I have an Asus AN8-E with Athlon 64 4000+ and ver.1010 BIOS. All is well.
Now I'm considering an Athlon 64 X2 and am wondering if it's ABSOLUTELY
neccessary to flash the BIOS to 1013.
I've read that the Winblows based utility that's on the Asus CD isn't
reliable so I made a bootable floppy and added "awdflash.exe" and
"a8ne1013.rom" to it.
Will this take me through the process or am I way off base?
It's been many years since I've tried to do this so any help will be
appreciated.

Have you looked at this list yet ? The Asus CPUSupport web page should
be able to tell you what you need to know. All the X2's appear to be
covered by 1010.

Most of the newer motherboards can do a flash update from within the
bios ... they don't need ANY OS or flash utility, although they do need
some media that they can read that has the later BIOS file on it.
Depending on the BIOS, this can be on a floppy, on a USB device or on a
hard drive in the root directory.

No. I'm typing this message using an AN8-E with the ver.1010 bios and an X2
4400+. There have been some issues reported with the 1013 bios. I would
not recommend updating.
