My brother is disabled and wants to be able to surf the net etc. from his
bed using a wireless kbd. and mouse. He doesn't have the room for an
additional monitor (and with his eyes the way they are, it would have to be
a 27") and doesn't want one. The question is what gfx card will give direct
output to the television without having to have a monitor set up at the same
time, or have to have it set up to configure the card to output the signal
to the t.v.? This will be paired with a P3 700@933, 256mb 133 SDRAM, and
W98SE. TIA.

Most boards with TV-out can use the TV as the only monitor. Very honestly
though if his eyes are bad he is probably not going to be happy with the
result unless the TV is capable of _displaying_ (not just accepting the
signal and downconverting it to something lower) 720P or 1080i high
definition and has a DVI input.

Buy a nice big lcd, get a tv tuner card and he's set, with the quality of
the lcd he can pull it close and have superb picturures from dvd's and the
tv tuner will be tv quality on the monitor (in a window or full screen).

A 27" tv using s-video would get a very sharp image at 640x480 on most gfx
cards, at 800x600 ATI's are much sharper the nvidia but still its nothing
great (but usable). Andmost windows programs won't run properly in 640x480.

any card will do it. if you set your card to "tv only" and turn your
machine off, the next time you turn it on it will go to the tv.

however, I would hate to surf the net using tv out. I hear Radeons have
better quality tvout but nvidia cards are shocking. Wouldn't be able to
read anything more than a few lines from a distance.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have used both a Ti4200 and an FX5900 with s-video on a TV. If the
s-video cable is used with no VGA connection the card will boot right to the
TV. The default allowed resolutions are 800x600 and 1024x768. The text is
not nearly as clear as a VGA monitor. You can tweak the font sizes but if
your eyesight is impaired then you may have problems.
