I'm considering buying the HP PhotoSmart 850.
I want to buy it simply because it has an optical zoom of 8x.
What are the other features like?
Would it be recommended?

Any help/opinions would be appreciated.

Look the cameras section over at dcviews.com for that digicam, and
read some reviews - it should tell you weak points and strong points
of the 850. The reviewers do not always agree on what they are...

The technical type of reviews can be confusing and the most
non-technical reviews may not give you a clear impression of how it
compares - and i would compare it to the (newer digicam but with a
slower lens) Olympus Camedia C-740 UltraZoom.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I had one for a while. Takes pretty good pictures, one was photo of the day
on steves digicams. The 8x optical zoom is great. The worst feature is it is
slow on the trigger, loooooong shutter lag. However if you anticipate your
shot, you can be sucessful.
