For my next PC I might build my own around a Pentium 4 system but I'm
also thinking of buying a Dell as they have some good deals on in some
of the UK papers and are reputed to be quiet (important for me). Most
though seem to use integrated graphics. The only games I play are stuff
like a demo version of Age of Empires 2 and other freebies/demos. They
dont count as 3D games do they? I do a bit of scanning sometimes too.

So, do you think I would be ok with integrated graphics or should I get
one with an AGP card?

My parents bought a Dell, and apart from the IBM hard drive, it is pretty
quiet.

Look on the box, or at the specs required for the games. If they mention
either DirectX or a range of graphics cards, then there is your answer. My
parent's Dell doesn't even have an AGP slot, so they can't even add a
graphics card later if they change their mind. I tried running a few games
on it, and about the only thing it would play was Praetorians, and it
whinged about the lack of 3d graphics hardware. Rise of Nations (similar to
Age of Empires 2) wouldn't even install with a lack of 3d graphics card.

Personally, I would recommend getting one with a graphics card. Dell do
produce machines with graphics cards built in, and at least if there is ever
an absolutely amazing game that you must play, you won't be held back. It
will help future proof the machine slightly, although Dell machines are not
very expandable (my parents machine only has 3 PCI slots, no AGP slot, space
for only one hard drive and that's about it).

In short, I would get a machine with a proper graphics card, even if it is
only a cheap one, as it opens up possibilities in the future.

Integrated video is a LAST resort. VERY poor performance in any 3D
applications.

Scanning in itself doesn't require a good video card but hi-res, zooming
in editing does benefit a lot from a large amount of video memory, even a
cheap low-end card.

Age of Empires 2 isn't 3D, but many "freebies/demos" might be. There
isn't anything about a demo making it that much less demanding than a full
version of a game.

Get a system that at least has an AGP slot... sooner or later you'll wish
you did. The only good reason to do without that is if it's a secondary
system and the main requirement is that the case is very small.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you really mean "quiet", my recommendation is - do not -
get a Dell.

First of all they don't use the quietist hard drives and
most give off a high pitched whine. In my experience,
Seagate is the quietest hard drive.

Their power supplies are reasonably quiet.

The case fans are built into a holder with a shroud around
it to help cool the CPU which is cooled with a heatsink,
but no fan.

These case fans cannot be replaced by an "extra quiet"
Pabst or Zalman because they are a one piece unit made to
fit with the shroud.

I have a Dimension 8200 and I replaced the hard drive
immediately and later, when the fan got noisy with age, I
had to rig something to mount a fan which goes faster and
slower (therefore softer and louder). The result is that
the fan is not recognized by the motherboard and everytime
I boot the machine, I have to tell it that it really does
have a fan even though it thinks it doesn't.

I guess what I'm saying is that they are built to be left
as they are. If you want a really quiet machine, you'd be
better off getting something that uses more standard
construction so that you can change a part you find noisy.

Two friends got the 4600. Both have reasonably quiet fans
and reasonably quiet power supplies. But both have whining
hard drives.

Do you want performance from the machine? you'll need to get one with an AGP
slot preferably 4x AGP. But as a Dell Certified Service Engineer myself I
never buy Dell's Smile Some of the high end CAD machines by Dell are ok but not
what I would call a gaming PC. Dell's are quiet machines but they only stay
that way until the parts wear out and then they get very noisey. The saying
"Dude your getting a Dell " is highly overated.
