graphics card help

hello,

i have intel p-4 2.4 on ausu p4vp-mx motherboard with 256 mb ram, it
uses onboard VIA ProSavage8 Graphics. i'm considering to purchase new
agp card of 64 mb for good gaming performance.. existing on board is
32 mb & not working with some games.

i want to know whether i need new card of 64 mb or else, is there any
way that works like 32 mb of onboard graphics + 32 mb of new card if i
purchase card of 32 mb...

First, the second option doesn't really exist. In theory, AGP and PCI-E
systems can both make use of main memory in addition to the memory
on the card, but in practise, this isn't of any real value. Second, the
amount of memory on the board isn't nearly as important as the memory
bus bandwidth and the processing capability of the chipset.

So...

First determine the sort of expansion slot you have in your motherboard.
Most likely you have an AGP slot.
Find a video card you can afford. You will be hard pressed to find a card
with less than 64MB of memory, and most current generation cards have
at least 128MB. Absolutely any current stand-alone card will run circles
around your ProSavage8. Try buying from a good web vendor like
www.newegg.com . At the low end, look for an ATI 9200 or Nvidia 5200
with a 128bit memory interface. Moving up a notch, try for an ATI 9600Pro
or Nvidia 6200, again with a 128bit memory interface. Up still another
step, Nvidia 6600s or ATI x700s make a good choice. If you still have
room in your bugdet, you can get solid mid-range performance from
an Nvidia 6600GT or a leftover ATI 9800Pro. Make sure the ATI 9800Pro
has a 256bit memory bus. Beyond that, you are picking from the ATI
x800 family or the Nvidia 6800 boards.
