i have a GF4 Ti4200 64MB and am thinking of upgrading to a DX9 card but cant
justify it at the moment. all my games run fine at highish resolutions but
i'm thinking of doom III and halflife 2, will they be alright or will i need
the extra power of an FX or Radeon card.
i'm a bit confused as the FX runs DX9 at 32 bit but the Radeon runs it at
24bit. this will give the radeon a bit of a head start but is that good or
bad. i cant really stretch to an FX5950 or 9800XT so what do you recommend
out there.

Robin.

Sys: Epox 8kra2+, xp3200+ (act 2500+)with Volcano9 HSF, 512 DDR400 Ram, GF4
Ti4200 (64 MB), SBlive 5.1 and maxtor diamond9 160GB HDD with seagate 40GB
slaved.

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB and love it, you can pick them up for
<$100 now I believe. DX9 support and good bang for your buck.

With a GF4 Ti4200 64MB card, you can probably hold off for the next
generation of cards - skipping one or two generations is usually a
sensible strategy.

I had a GF3 Ti200 card which was starting to show its age, and like
you I couldn't justify the cost of an FX5950. The next best thing
was an FX5700 Ultra which I'm quite pleased with, but I'm not pushing
it too hard with my XP 1800+ (I'm considering upgrading it to an
Athlon64 3200+ next.) I avoided the Radeon cards because they lack
good support under Linux - my primary OS; YMMV.
