Regarding DS101g+ write performance:

Maybe it's the reiserfs or disk quotas (I don't know if they're actually using disk quotas or just have the hooks in there for it.)

Check out the development at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DS101/HomePage.

The bootstrap script published there will allow you to install packages from a central feed. I'm not sure if Slimserver is already included, but I think it's one of the first that will be studied.

The guys behind this are working hard and doing a great job ! You can help them out by testing and modifying packages.

Cheers !

Post subject: Question to DS-101 hackers [Login to view extended thread Info.]

Hi,
I come to you, experts, to try to get some light.

I am trying to solve a data throughput problem I have, since the beginning of my DS-101 use, in May!
I already put a post some time ago about it
I am in contact with Synology support people, but my problem is still present.

I make my tests in backing up my PC data disk :
Number of directories : about 7400
Number of Files : about 88000 (from 2k to 500MBytes)
Total size : about 34 GB

The normal throughput, in transfering a 299 MB file, is 6.5 MBytes/s.
after making a backup, the throughput fall to 1 MByte/s, 1 time out of 3 !
Synology people found, via telnet that, at this time, my disk was no more in DMA mode.
I have to reboot the DS-101 to get it up !

I changed the disk and the DS-101. the problem is the same :

First disk (Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250 GB) and First DS-101 box

Second Disk (Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400 GB) and First DS-101 box

Second Disk (Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400 GB) and Second DS-101 box

I made numerous tests (with or without earth connection, with ot without USB connection...) the result is the same.

Does any of you found sometime the same behavior ?
I think there is something wrong in the software or in the driver.
Any Idea ?

Many thanks for your advices

Hello mates!! Damn nice things you have figured out so far.

I just love the box. But the thing with speed. Yeah it's to slow.

Have some questions about the HDD have bought a Seagate 400 gb.

F.eks if i cut a movie from one folder to another located ON the drive it takes damn long time. Shouldet it do it like in a second or is it only when you run NTFS on you windows machine? Because when i do it there on an older harddisk it takes a couple of seconds to copy but the diskstation an eternity to do it.

Another thing when it's not NTFS because it's linux. What about deframents on the disk?? is there a way to defrag or is not nessecery.??

Hope someone can fix the speed on the 1 BG interface it's a pity to let a nice machine get down because of that.

PS. What ekstra features are no working for the DS-101g+ i have read all the things in the forum but, I am not sure what is for the 101 and for the 101g+.

Best Regards.

Hi @ all
I have also a DS101g+ with the newest firmware 3.0240. I've tried to hack the DS with the PHP trick, which was posted in this thread earlier, but it wasn't successful Sad
If I rename the file into *.php I will get an error like "Sorry, the requested page isn't available" into a Synology like frame.
*.php3, *.php4 etc. also won't work, the DS shows me only the code as text, that means there is no MIME setting for these extensions.

I downloaded the source files, but it looks like the code is from V.0199 Sad
Has anyone an idea to access telnet ?

Thanks

Hello tompi

Enable telnet worked fine for me.

Create the enabletelnet.php with this code

<?php
system('echo "telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/telnetd telnetd" > /etc/inetd.conf');
system('killall -HUP inetd');
?>

and the disabletelnet.php with this code
<?php
system('echo "#telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/telnetd telnetd" > /etc/inetd.conf');
system('killall -HUP inetd');
?>

The php3 extension is not needed in the new firmware

when you have uploaded your files to your web directory.

Rember to add the /x to your url when you enable.
http://ds101-ip/enabletelnet.php/x

Hope this works for you..

And to all of the others in here. Is there a packaded to add a radius and mysql server to the diskstation 101g+ i have only found packages for the ds-101.

Best Regards

Johnni

Hello everyone!
I think my Synology 101 is broken...
whatever I try, I can't access the data.

Is there any other way to read the disk if I put it directly into my Win2000 station? Any program or so to read the data?

Thanx for help

I´m using a DS101j and having the same problem as TOMPI. How will you run the above mentioned php script if the DS does not support PHP with the actual firmware (this is what Mr. Bear Wang from Synology support wrote on my question if the DS101j supports php) ?

Is there a trick to enable php without using a php file to enable php?

Regards

The script is to enable TELNET not PHP.

PHP is already enabled in the original firmware (the entire Synology webinterface is based on PHP, so it must be enabled), but it has been messed with by the good people from Synology. What they do is redirect all *.php pages to a specific page to make it look like PHP is disabled. But adding the /x to the end off the *.php fools this redirect.

The /x necessity can also be removed, take a look in the yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ds101-linux/). there is a script somewhere to get rid of the /x necessity (basically it comments out a line from Apaches httpd.conf and httpd.conf.def)
