Post subject: Please help: MSI 865PE NEO2 (MS-6728) hangs unexpectedly
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>msi-microstar (more info?)

I've built a PC using the "MSI 865PE NEO2 (MS-6728)" motherboard
which, recently, has started to hang on occasion. It only started to
happen recently and i can't figure out the pattern exactly. What
happens is that the red LED light underneath my MS intellimouse
explorer goes off and keyboard stops working, plus the video and sound
are also frozen. I.e. its not a BSOD- which would be more favourable
because then at least i'd know what caused the problem!

Anyway, this is what i've done so far:

1) i've tried changing my mouse and i've also un-installed and
re-installed intellipoint software. Still the same problem....

2) I had the new ami bios 1.7, so i went back to 1.5, but still have
the same problem....

3) Updated my windows from windows update and my norton antivirus
software and virus definitions. Did a full system scan as well- i'm
not infected by any virus and the problem is still there....

I've ran out of ideas and have no idea what the problem is!! Please
can someone shed some light. Also has anyone else had this problem
before?

My setup is:

MSI 865PE NEO2 (MS-6728)
Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz (800 MHz FSB) Processor with HT enabled
2X 256MB PC3700 Corsair DDR-RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (by Hercules)
Creative Audigy 2
Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI TV card
IBM DTLA-307030 30GB Hard disk (Secondary Slave)
IBM 180GXP 180GB Hard disk (Primary Master)
Plextor 708A DVD Re-Writer (Secondary Master)
Plextor 401240 CD Re-Writer (Primary Slave)

Windows XP SP1 (with all the latest updates)
Intel motherboard drivers
Catalyst 3.7 drivers
DirectX 9

BIOS speed settings:
Speed: SLOW (otherwise it won't boot up)
Dynamic OC: CAPTAIN

Cheers,
Jo

Jo,

Are you using the latest Intel 865 drivers (v.5.0.2.1002)? They install a
new USB driver.

Hope this helps.

Pippr, nice setup. Is it a usb mouse? I have the MS optical mouse and gave
up on usb. It came with a little ps2 adaptor and I now use that in the ps2
port.

My other usb stuff like printer and pda hookup is OK.

Hi, well i finally solved the problem. As it turned out, i read
somewhere that the AGP 'Aperture Size' should be half your physical
memory. Mine was set to 128 MB, but my physical memory is 512 MB. So
after increasing the AGP-AS to 256 MB, no more hang-ups!! The
headache's over at last. Back to rock-solid performance !!!

I think what happened was that when i had previously updated my bios
to 1.7 and set it to default settings, i must have forgotten to adjust
the default AGP-AS size (128 MB) to 256 MB.

Anyway, problem solved. If anyone else has this problem, i hope you
know what to do .... Smile

I have the same board. You are really loaded up and I suspect
power supply problems. You are using the newer ATX12V
connector (4 pin) which goes to the MB? You will need that
extra 16A of additional power.

Take all out and start only with Video card and one hard
drive. Add one additional component at a time. Power problem
could come from anywhere. Good luck

I had the same problem. I just download the latest BIOS v1.9.
According to the website, the patch is to improve the system
stability. So I believe this is MSI's bugs and hope this version could
fix the problem.
